The KILL kNOT Project began in Southern California in 2019 with communities tying knots in inch-wide, yard-long strips of discarded fabric - each knot for a life lost to gun violence in America. 3,500 knots were tied in the initial KILL kNOT installation

THE FIRST INSTALLATION. This installation included approximately 3,500 knots; A number which doesn't come close to the number of gun deaths in America so far in 2019 alone.

ANY COMMUNITY CAN START THEIR OWN KILL kNOT PROJECT to keep the issue of lives lost to gun violence present in a community and to help move us to make change. The Gun Violence Archive and Brady United Against Gun Violence are good resources to identify how you might want to focus your project and your goal for the number of knots you tie. Knots can be tied to represent the aspect of gun violence that most moves your community or group.

Once you've decided how many incidents of gun violence you want to remember through your project, begin by gathering discarded clothing or fabric and cutting or tearing it into strips. One inch strips about a yard long work well. Tie knots comfortably along each fabric strip, roughly 3 to 6 inches apart.

Once tied, knots can be displayed as the individual artist or group of artists choose. They can be placed on the ground, hung overhead or put on standing structures. They can be arranged so that a visitor experiences them by walking through the installation. Text to guide the visitor's experience can be created by your group of artists to reflect upon the issues most pressing to you.
