One hotel. Seven completely different worlds.

Built in 1946 as a Hollywood hideaway for Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, and Lana Turner, The Lafayette Hotel in North Park just dropped its first major renovation since the day it opened and they did not hold back. A $31M reimagination later, this place is operating like a fever dream city within a city.

The lobby hits you first: gilded crown moldings, vintage checkered marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and animal print banquettes ya know the kind of room that makes you feel like you walked into the Ritz Paris if the Ritz went maximalist in the best way possible.

Then Quixote. An Oaxacan mezcaleria built entirely from a decommissioned Catholic church in Mexico the owner literally called it a place of “agnostic worship.” One side is the dark altar, one is the light altar. You eat mole in a pew. That’s the vibe.

Then there’s Lou Lou’s Jungle Room, which is basically what would happen if Rainforest Cafe had a glow up, hosted a jazz supper club, and also happened to be the exact room where Tom Cruise sang “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” in Top Gun.

Beginner’s Diner runs 24/7 and is a faithful recreation of a 1940s diner like booth dimensions, custom flatware, fountain drinks, all of it. They consulted an actual diner historian. The Gutter is a private bowling and billiards bar modeled after Henry Frick’s personal bowling alley and the final scene of There Will Be Blood.

Universal Studios Hollywood just turned into an actual movie theme park within a theme park. Mega Movie Summer 2026 is back for year two and it’s somehow bigger. There’s a Fast & Furious 25th anniversary takeover with real picture cars on display, a Trojan Horse from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey standing 34 feet tall at CityWalk, Minions & Monsters characters making their park debut with a full dance party, Wicked’s Elphaba and Glinda doing meet and greets, and a Jaws menu that’s somehow still the most slept on part of the whole event. Every single food stall has a themed item right now. This runs through August 9 and it’s included in regular admission, no extra ticket required.

San Diego is hiding a space pirate bar inside a Spanish Mission Revival building and it has a famous bathroom and I need you to understand how much is happening here.

MOTHERSHIP is an award winning retro-futurist tropical cocktail bar built around a full storyline: an ancient astronaut crew crash lands on an uncharted planet, fashions their ship into a base camp, and starts making drinks. That’s the lore. That’s why the walls are overgrown. That’s why you enter through a cave. That’s why the ceiling is covered in stars.
The cocktail menu reads like a Star Trek prop: Wormhole, Astro Zombie, Mindkiller, Annihilator. Some of them are made with a TANG cordial. The food is all plant-based small plates they call “earth food.” Sweet potato donuts with rosemary glaze. Pineapple curry ice cream. The whole menu has alcohol strength ratings so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

And the bathrooms are red HAL9000 themed.

The coffee shop where a life-size velociraptor wearing a flower crown guards the espresso bar, a fire-breathing Godzilla stares at you from a mural made entirely out of Post-It notes, and a giant gold disco ball is just… hanging there. This is what happens when a craft beer company with a DIY funhouse brain teams up with San Diego’s most maximalist hospitality group and nobody tells them to slow down. The Invigatorium is a CH Projects and Modern Times collab born in East Village, and it goes way harder than a coffee shop has any right to.
