Roberts Projects is participating in Art Basel Miami Beach 2019 with a presentation of new monumental work by Betye Saar and Kehinde Wiley, along with contributions by Jeffrey Gibson, Amoako Boafo, Lenz Geerk, Wangari Mathenge, Otis Quaicoe, Celeste Rapone, Ardeshir Tabrizi and Zhao Zhao.
Our booth is located at J11.

Drawing influence from popular music, fashion, literature, cultural and critical theory, and his own individual heritage, Jeffrey Gibson's work recontextualizes the familiar to offer a succinct commentary on cultural hybridity and the assimilation of modernist artistic strategies within contemporary art. Gibson’s Cherokee and Choctaw lineage has imparted a recognizable aesthetic to his beaded works exploring narrative deconstructions of both image and language as transmitted through figuration.

Two pieces hanging in a collection, quietly looking for some company.

The more I think about this series the more I feel that they seem to be speaking about the migration of ideas and how Islam as an idea spread throughout the Middle East and it’s influence on the people, the culture, art and even social interactions for centuries to come. A single way of life influencing countless people. Before this influence Zoroastrianism was primarily influencing the minds of men. I wonder sometimes how the Middle East and Iran would look if that latter influence remained. How would it’s people live today? Who would they or I be? For better or worse.

Secondly, how are todays migrants influencing the places they are migrating to? How will those places change because of it? “Masjid” is closing on November 16th 2019
