Who was James Lewis? đź‘€

An obscure American 45 crossed the Atlantic and found a new life on Britain’s Northern Soul dance floors.

Case Of Tyme’s “Manifesto” became a Wigan favorite, with Brian Rae playing it in the legendary Mr M’s. More than 50 years later, part of its story remains a mystery.

Were you there? Does anyone remember hearing “Manifesto” played in Mr M’s?

Cash Box thought this one could chart. Britain had other plans.

Tommy Neal’s “Goin’ to a Happening” came out of Detroit in 1967, written and produced by Richard “Popcorn” Wylie.

It never became the American hit Cash Box predicted, but across the Atlantic it found another life on the Northern Soul dance floor.

Bare feet inspired a hit.

“Barefootin’” became a 1966 New Orleans hit, reaching #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Northern Soul kept the beat alive.
