Stands Alone
Isnála Nážiŋ

After weeks on my easel, he is finally finished.

I didn’t intentionally plan the timing of this reveal, but I realized this week that it coincides with a day recognizing Native American people and culture, which makes sharing this piece feel especially meaningful.

The reference for this painting came from the National Archives. Unlike my painting of Zitkala-Sa, I wasn’t able to find a name or story attached to this man. Rather than create a history for someone whose story I don’t know, I chose to let the image stand on its own.

That’s where the title Stands Alone came from. Isnála Nážiŋ is a Lakota expression for “stands alone”—not intended as this man’s name or tribal identification, but as a companion to the English title.

This was one of those paintings where I had to trust the process for a long time. Slowly, all of those individual shapes and areas of color came together into one finished piece.

This gorgeous painting by Jennifer Kalous is of the Native American activist Zitkala-Sa.
As the artist describes, "Zitkala-sa is an Indigenous woman who was a part of the Yankton Dakota Sioux tribe who lived from 1876-1938. She lived with her mom on the reservation but went to a Quaker school for many years. Later in life Zitkala-Sa wrote books about her juxtaposition of her native roots and American upbringing. Not only was she an author she was a violinist who wrote the first Native American opera."

Jason has been featured in VoyageKC!

"Q: If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
A: Being as honest as we can be. There are times when it comes down to two choices of frame designs and the customer relies on our expertise to help them make a decision. If one design is more expensive than the other, we will always choose what is best for the art, even if it’s the less expensive."

Featured Artist - Wanda Taylor
Wanda started using her daughter’s colored pencils to add a bit of color to her black ink drawings.

After experimenting with them, she came to realize creating with colored pencils wasn't much different than working with other mediums. Mixing colors on the paper, layering, color blocking, and using compliments for shading. It felt natural to her to have beautiful colors at her disposal.

Wanda also participates in art festivals during the summer and fall months in the Midwest.

Come in to Fusion Fine Art to see more of her work. You may also check out more about Wanda and other Fusion artists at https://www.fusion-fineart.com/the-artists.
