Progress is being made on the surface grinder project, the electronics have been updates and it is being cleaned up and has new paint on it all. Have some bits to tidy up and finish putting together, and then this old machine can start new life.

Many things have been going on and one of the big ones that has been a source of contention in my shop has been the mixing of metal working and woodworking in the same space, or at least in the same room. Since its construction, i have had my metal storage in a seperate room as i thought that it fit the best there, but recently i have had more and more issues with small fires and worries of danger with hot metal and wood chips in the same space, so a couple weeks ago, i decided it was time to remedy this. And i took and moved my storage rack and all of my woodworking tools around. Took arounf 10 hours between 2 days, but now all of my metal is in one room and my wood in another.

You can see the transformation here, i estimate there was roughly around 1 ton worth of metal on the rack that i had to unload, and then reload once it was moved.

As things sometimes happen to fall into my lap, i was fortunate enough to come into possession of a simple 90v dc motor and a 7:1 gearbox, and had the idea to turn these into a rotary weld positioner table. This was a fun job and project to work on, and with the held of come CAD and the CNC plasma table. Made this significantly easier, then i have been learning how to do some TIG welding lately as well, so i used that to do the welds for this. I still have to button up the power and controller, but this works great for now, now i can do circular welds with ease and precision.

Had a wonderful time on this project as i took a 100 year old manual drill press and fully restored it. I will give a list of the multitude of things that i did to it here.

1. Re-made the main spindle shaft, as the old one was worn down and was too small from the wear that had built up in the spindle journals and has significant runout.

2. Bored out and made a bushing for the main large spur gear as it had worn out and had a large ampunt of slop.

3. Bored out and put a new bushing onto the sleeve that captured the ACME screw that actuated the down feed mechanism.

4. Completely re-made the main drive handle and made a new wooden handle to accompany it.

5. Remade the down feed screw handle.

6. Cleaned and sandblasted 100% of the parts and then painted with oil based enamel machine paint.

This whole transformation was a lot of fun to do. There are a few other smaller things that i did that fit in with the other parts of this whole restoration, but in the end it turned out fantastic and it runs like a dream now, super smooth, very very little runout, and i hope it will last another 100 years.

Got another awesome knife out to a customer recently, this one a full custom combat utility tanto, made from some insanely tough CPM S90V at a HRC 61 this is so tough it cant even be polished, and wore out more belts than i care to admit, but it is an amazing steel that i want to use more of, it is also 3/16" thick, hallow ground bit a 600 grit belt finish, the handle is done with 304 stainless dovetailed bolsters and black linen micarta with 3 stainless corby pins.

The sheath in this one is special made so that it is fully ambidextrous, the knife can go in either way, it also has a full size multi-tool pouch, and fire striker holder. the body of the sheath is 9-10oz and the pouch, for the sake of wet forming is 5oz leather. This whole project was a lot of fun to make and i look forward to more soon.

I have been working on the surface grinder quite a bit lately, and have found that it is early 1940's, it was missing the main hydraulic pump motor, so i found a modern replacement and had to make a couple of adapter plates and pieces to have it fit, but it now should function perfectly.

Have also gone through and started cleaning it, as it seems to have a good amount of old gunk built up from its many years of service, as well as going through the electronics and control board, which with the help of an experienced friend, was able to get power into it and find out that the main contactor is bad, so i am in search of replacements for that. It is still a work in progress, but it is coming along nicely.

I hope you all have a wonderful 4th and enjoy the weekend!

So even while being sick this last week, it has still been very exciting, as i have 2 new pieces of equiment that just entered the shop. From both spectrums of age eras, the first is a 1940's Brown and Sharpe No. 5 Surface grinder, this machine is in need of a bit of clean up and some TLC, which i am excited to start on and get this old machine back to running in top shape the way it should, i am very excited as this is a very powerful and beautiful machine, stay tuned as i will be doing my best to document and even video as i work my way through the machine to bring it back to life!

The second machine to enter the shop is very very new, with the help of a generous and silent partner, the shop has aquired a Langmuir Systems Crossfire Pro CNC Plasma table! This tool will be able to make everything from simple brackets, to signs and fire rings, and much much more. I am very excited to get to learn and use this new machine to make all kinds of fun projects that can open a lot of options for new items to be able to supply and sell. If you have any ideas for a project you would like to have made, please feel free to message me any time as i will be working with this a lot in the coming weeks and months.
