In observance of the federal holiday, the Giiwedinong Treaty Rights and Culture Museum will be CLOSED on Juneteenth (O6/19), recognizing the importance of commemorating the same date in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally received word that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

This new exhibit explores events and experiences from the past winter, focusing on the challenges, social unrest, resilience, and acts of community care that shaped communities across Minnesota, particularly in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Through photographs, stories, and community perspectives, Minnesota in Winter invites visitors to reflect on a significant moment in our state's recent history while encouraging dialogue, understanding, and connection.

The opening reception will feature opportunities for community gathering, reflection, and conversation, with special artistic contributions helping to bring the exhibit's themes to life.

We welcome community members, families, educators, and visitors of all backgrounds to join us as we open this important new exhibit together.

Thank You for an Incredible Procession of the Species! 🦋

What a remarkable day of art, science, culture, community, and celebration!

The Giiwedinong Museum would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make our first Procession of the Species such a success. Inspired by the annual return of the monarch butterflies and the incredible biodiversity of our region, this event brought together artists, educators, cultural practitioners, musicians, dancers, families, and community members in a joyful celebration of life on Earth.

We are deeply grateful to our guest artists, Mary Plaster and Chris Lutter, for leading our monarch puppet-making workshop and helping participants create the beautiful puppets and artwork that filled the Procession.

A special thank you goes out to the organizations that joined us to share their knowledge and enthusiasm, including the Bell Museum, Headwaters Science Center, and the Fargo Moorhead Science Museum. Their demonstrations and activities helped connect participants with the wonders of science and nature.

Thank you as well to the artists and vendors who shared their creativity and talents throughout the day, helping make the celebration vibrant, inspiring, and unique.

We are especially grateful to the Smokey Hill Drum Group and the dancers and singers from Northland Community Schools for bringing Ojibwe song, dance, and culture to Heartland Park. Your contributions added beauty, energy, and meaning to the celebration and helped remind us of the deep connections between people, culture, and the natural world.

To the volunteers, organizers, partner organizations, participants, and everyone who marched, drummed, danced, created, carried puppets, and cheered along the route: Miigwech. Your enthusiasm transformed an idea into a living, breathing community celebration.

'Til next year!

Honoring the Chinese Year of the Fire Horse, this exhibit invites you into a powerful gathering of stories that trace the deep, enduring relationships between horses and human societies across cultures.

At its heart, Horse Nations centers Indigenous horse cultures of North America—stories of strength, kinship, resilience, and continuity that continue to move through time like hoofbeats across the land.

Join us in May as we open this special exhibit, on display throughout the month at the Park Rapids Armory Gallery.

Due to extreme cold temperatures in our area — with wind chills reaching as low as -40°F — the Giiwedinong Treaty Rights & Culture Museum will be closed on Saturday, January 24th to keep our staff and visitors safe.

In our cultures, times like this are traditionally meant for staying indoors, keeping warm, sharing stories, and spending time with loved ones. The land reminds us when it is time to rest, reflect, and care for one another.

We encourage everyone to stay safe, stay warm, and take this time to gather, listen, and reconnect. We look forward to welcoming you back once conditions improve 🤍
