THE FINE IS GONE — BUT POOL HAS SEEN THIS FIGHT BEFORE.

Earlier this year, Sofia Mast competed in the Ultimate Pool USA Florida Open, winning both the Women’s Open and Mixed Pairs.

At the time, Sofia was only 17—but because the WPBA classified her as an “Elite Pro,” she was fined $2,000 for competing in a non-WPBA-sanctioned event.

Her sponsors stood behind her, the decision was appealed, and much of the pool community spoke out in support.

Now the WPBA has dismissed the penalty in its entirety, and Sofia says the fine has officially been withdrawn.

This wasn’t happening in a vacuum.

The WPA and Matchroom recently spent years fighting over the same basic issue. Players faced suspensions for entering non-sanctioned World Nineball Tour events before the two organizations finally reached an agreement in 2025 and lifted those penalties.

The organizations and circumstances are different—but the question is remarkably similar:

When most professional pool players still need multiple tours and outside events to make a living, should any organization be able to dictate where they compete?

Was Sofia’s reversal proof that the appeal process worked—or another sign that pool’s governing bodies need to rethink these restrictions entirely?
