Soon after the introduction of the foxtrot in 1914, two variations developed: a slow version done at about forty measures per minute and a fast version done at more than fifty measures per minute. In England, the fast foxtrot was called the quickstep; in America it was called the Peabody, named after a New York policeman, Lieutenant William Frank Peabody. He was a portly, but good-natured, bachelor who, despite his considerable weight, was light on his feet and who loved to dance.

Arthur Murray Paoli Foxtrot Bronze Combinations session tonight, Thursday, June 29th at 7:45pm.
~
Resembling a fast-paced version of the waltz, the foxtrot moves with flowing motions across the dance floor. It's typically danced to big band style music. Changes in the foxtrot have occurred over the years. Today the foxtrot is often used to describe a slow version of the dance while the quickstep is a faster version. In the American style, the foxtrot has a slow-quick-quick rhythm and graceful moves, though international versions of the foxtrot exist as well. Variations of this dance can look like the polka, with a focus on the slow, slow, quick, quick beat.

Salsa is a partnered dance where the lead takes the follower through a series of spins and turn patterns to music. Salsa's tempo ranges from about 150bpm (beats per minute) to around 250bpm, although most dancing is done to music somewhere between 160 and 220bpm. The basic Salsa dance rhythm consists of taking three steps for every four beats of music. Salsa dancers can also break apart to dance solo, known as "shines."

Arthur Murray Paoli Waltz Bronze 1 & 2 session tonight, Tuesday, June 27th at 7pm.
~
The modern Waltz was started in Vienna and in the Austrian mountains as a dance for royalty. While all previous court dances were rigid, solemn dances with complicated movements in processional, the informal, close position of the Waltz couples sparked scandals among ballroom dancers. As a result, it quickly rose in popularity.
