Peng Piano Academy

Peng Piano Academy Summer piano festival designed for well-motivated piano students up to age 18 to learn in a noncompetitive, musically intensive and nourishing environment.

The Peng Piano Academy is a summer piano festival designed for well-motivated piano students up to age 18 to learn in a noncompetitive, musically intensive and nourishing environment. Our program promotes a wide array of understanding on fine musicianship, and in particular, driven to achieve a high-level of pianism. Founded in 2013 by Karen Lin Peng (Boston Conservatory, Mannes College of Music),

the goal of the Peng Piano Academy is to bring together a community of passionate and musically-minded young pianists in an environment that will -- for one intensive week -- push them beyond their musical boundaries, allow them to explore the vast and inspiring world of the piano, and gain a fuller understand and appreciation for their art form. The campsite is set at the Unitarian church in Palo Alto, featuring a formal concert hall and other fine facilities. Its tree-lined and secluded location provides a peaceful surrounding for the young musicians to learn and reflect upon their designated musical elements. Students will engage in a week-long program of masterclasses, private lessons, lectures and workshops. All participants will perform in the final concert on the last day.

Last but not least in our Faculty Showcase Series, we have our founder and director, Karen Lin Peng.

Praised for her “high musical instinct and a fine control over the keyboard…”, Taiwanese-born American pianist Karen Lin Peng studied piano with Jung-Ja Kim and chamber music with cellist Ronald Thomas at the Boston Conservatory. She earned her master’s degree in piano performance from the Mannes College of Music under the tutelage of Arkady Aronov. She later became a pupil of the celebrated pianist Anthony di Bonaventura. In January 2024, Peng gave her first solo recital since leaving Taiwan decades ago at the New Taipei City Arts Center. Peng was on the piano faculty of The Boston Conservatory of Music Extension Division and The Music School Piano Immersion Program with Roger Williams College in Rhode Island. Peng is a member of the Music Teachers Association of California, she was an adjudicator for the New Jersey Music Teachers Association Young Musician Competition, and served as the adjudicator for the American Fine Arts Festival Carnegie Hall Audition.

Next in our Faculty Showcase Series, we have returning faculty Jean-David Coen!

Pianist Jean-David Coen, Artist in Residence at Willamette University in Oregon has studied and holds degrees from the Paris Conservatory Juilliard, and Yale; finishing with his Doctorate from the University of Southern California. He worked with significant masters representing each of the 3 great and most essential pianistic traditions: the German, Russian, and French “schools” of interpretation and technique. These great artists included Adele Marcus, Jeanne-Marie Darre, Claude Frank, Sacha Gorodnitzki, and John Perry. Jean-David began concertizing with orchestra when he was 9, and by 17 had performed both Tchaikovsky and Brahms first piano concertos. He has played around the world, with orchestras like the Los Angeles Philharmonic, in Tanglewood, and the Oregon Bach Festival. Completing a circle started with his performance of the Chopin G minor Ballade at the age of 12 in the famous tent at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Coen became a member of the Piano and Chamber Music faculty there; his tenure lasting 24 years.
