In the Hausa language of Nigeria, Giwayen Mata means "elephant women," a name given to the leaders of women's organizations there. Like elephants, they're a multi-generational herd — nurturing one another, leading one another, and carrying their culture forward with dignity and grace.
Grounded in the movements, rhythms, and songs of the African Diaspora, their performances reflect, celebrate, and unlock the hidden treasures of Black womanhood. With feet on the sacred grounds of our Indigenous American ancestors and the birth lands of their African foremothers and forefathers, they stand tall in honor of the beautiful tapestry of life that shapes who they are.
