Scientific illustration has been paving the way for some of our greatest conservation stories since the 1800s (and further back yet!). Without striking maps, drawings, and writing, we may not have any bison left in North America!

Ready for the Bison Treatment for your research? Commissions are open for scientific illustration, graphic design, and writing! DM us or email at arctichavenak [at] gmail [dot] com. Let's get your research in front of the people who need to see it!

I’m learning so much at the annual Guild of Natural Science Illustrators conference this weekend, while working on a commissioned wolf piece.

I’m new to the professional side of scientific illustration, though I’ve been doing it most of my life without always knowing it. I can’t say how cool it is to hear from so many experienced and talented people who spend their days bringing science to life through illustration, community engagement, data visualization, and teaching. I can’t wait for day 2 tomorrow!

How much bigger are moose than elk?
Moose (Alces alces) and elk (Cervis canadensis) are the two largest members of the deer family, but they are not created equal. Moose can stand 7 feet tall at the shoulders and weigh upwards of 1,800 pounds. Elk, on the other hand, are usually 5 feet at the shoulder and top out around 800 pounds. Both species are big compared to a human, and should be given a wide berth if you encounter one. With strong hooves and a wicked kick, they are not to be messed with!

Both species have the "cloven hoof" characteristic of the deer family and other "even-toed ungulates", like cows: their hooves are split in two halves, unlike, for example, horses, which have one solid hoof. However, moose hooves can measure up to 7 inches long, while elk hooves are usually 4-5 inches long. These plaster casts show their hooves side-by-side 🤯

Plaster casts are part of a display at Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit Headquarters.

We’ve been quiet on here while we enjoy summer, work on new projects, and, you know [gestures at the world]. But we’re still here, making art that we can’t wait to share with you, and planning the future of Arctic Haven! 🤍🏔️
