An icon of Palm Springs modernism, the Alexander Estate (also known as the House of Tomorrow) was designed in 1960 by architect William Krisel for Helene and Robert Alexander of the Alexander Construction Company.

The home is located in the historic Vista Las Palmas neighborhood, and features a striking futuristic design made up of four interconnected circular pods. Krisel once explained the concept simply: “circles have no edge, you can approach them from anywhere.”

The residence later became internationally famous as the “Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway,” where ELVIS PRESLEY and Priscilla Presley spent their honeymoon in 1967. More than six decades later, the home remains a celebrated example of Palm Springs’ experimental and optimistic midcentury modern architecture.

Originally designed in 1961 by architect E. Stewart Williams as the Santa Fe Federal Savings & Loan building, the Palm Springs Architecture and Design Center, Edward Harris Pavilion remains one of the city’s defining examples of midcentury modern architecture.

At a time when banks were shedding heavy, traditional façades in favor of open, welcoming spaces, this design embodied a new vision for community-centered architecture. Elevated on a floating plinth with sliding metal shade screens to soften the desert sun, the building was both innovative and distinctly Palm Springs.

Today, the reimagined space serves as the Palm Springs Art Museum's Architecture and Design Center, preserving the legacy of modernism while inspiring new generations through through exhibitions, archives, a study center, and library.

Join a Modernism Week Architecture Tour if you'd like to learn more about Palm Springs' architectural treasures. Tours end on May 30.

Designed by Albert Frey and A. Lawrence Kocher in 1931, Aluminaire House was the first all-metal house in the United States. This radical experiment in modern, affordable design was built in just 10 days. 🤯

After decades of relocation and dedicated preservation efforts, the iconic structure has found its home in Palm Springs, as part of the permanent collection at the Palm Springs Art Museum.

It's so easy to fall in love...with the iconic architecture of Palm Springs 😍

You may have driven by Temple Isaiah Palm Springs, but have you really stopped to take a look at this stunning structure? Originally designed in 1949-1952 by E. Stewart Williams, expanded in 1960-1962 by Wexler & Harrison, and redesigned in 1982-1987 by David Christian, this multi-phase complex represents three significant periods of midcentury and contemporary architecture. Through its long-standing role as a religious and cultural hub, Temple Isaiah has also made a meaningful contribution to the development of Palm Springs.

“The origins of American modernism are found in Los Angeles in the work of R.M. Schindler and R. Neutra and in Palm Springs in the homes by Donald Wexler.” - former Architectural Record Editor-in- Chief Robert Ivy

Designed between 1960-1962 by architects Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison, the iconic Steel Houses were envisioned as a bold new model for affordable modern living in Palm Springs. The experimental development was built by the Alexander Construction Co., and aimed to prove that prefabricated steel homes could be low-cost, easily replicable, and perfectly suited to the desert climate.

Using modular steel-frame construction, the homes featured dramatic rooflines, expansive walls of glass, open floor plans, and flexible layouts. Only seven homes were ultimately built after rising steel costs halted the project, but their architectural influence endures to this day.

Learn more about these and other architectural landmarks in Palm Springs during the Modernism Week Architecture Tours, running through May 30.
