Buddy Rich, born Bernard Rich, September 30, 1917 – April 2, 1987, was an American jazz drummer, bandleader, and composer, widely regarded as one of the most influential drummers of all time. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was a child prodigy who began performing in vaudeville at a very young age and started playing drums early in life.
Rich rose to prominence during the swing era, performing with major bandleaders such as Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, and Harry James. Known for his exceptional speed, power, and technical skill, he became famous for his virtuosic drumming style and dynamic live performances. In the 1960s, he achieved lasting success leading the Buddy Rich Big Band, which became one of the most popular big bands of its time.
Throughout his career, Rich maintained a reputation for musical excellence and showmanship, influencing generations of drummers across jazz and popular music. Despite not reading sheet music, he relied on his memory and instinct, further highlighting his natural talent and musicianship.
Buddy Rich died on April 2, 1987, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 69, from a heart attack (myocardial infarction).
