"Who's Afraid of Red, White and Blue?"

Between 1966 and 1970, Barnett Newman created several works he collectively titled “Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue?” The formalists and purists who preceded him, such as Piet Mondrian, had effectively created an “ownership” of these colors, driving away the next generation of artists who then eschewed the primary palette. Frank Stella’s Black Series, Robert Ryman’s Shades of White, and the overall embracing of muted pallets became the prevailing aesthetic. But Newman didn’t simply question why expression was running away from these colors; he himself ran straight into them. He created four seminal works that fully embraced red, yellow, and blue and rescued these colors so vital to expression.

Much the same way that Mondrian claimed ownership of red, yellow, and blue, contemporary conservative America has hijacked ownership of our country’s primary colors - red, white, and blue - and our most significant symbol, the American flag.
In the spirit of Newman from 1966, the artists at the Lofts District are running full steam in taking back ownership of our country’s primary colors and symbols, and ask the question, “Who’s Afraid of Red, White and Blue?”
