Friends of the Uffizi Gallery To raise awareness of the Uffizzi and its cultural treasures by providing resources for acquisition,

Amici degli Uffizi, established in 1993 after the Uffizi bombing, has supported the Uffizi Gallery in Florence by facilitating acquisitions, supporting restorations and organizing special events. Friends of the Uffizi USA works with Amici to raise funds to support these activities through the efforts of its dedicated members and patrons. Over 30 restoration projects have been completed since 2011.

The Uffizi Gallery, originally showcasing the Medici family collection of ancient sculptures, is considered one of the world's first public museums. It receives over 1.6 million visitors per year and is the home to some of antiquity's most treasured Renaissance art. Working closely with the museum's curatorial staff, both groups play a vital role in preserving and restoring one of the worlds most important museums and the cultural heritage of Western civilization.

The theme is quite peculiar and curious, showing the art of shoe making in the ancient world, which also inspired Hollywood film genre of "sword and sandal" and even modern designers such as Ferragamo.

Excitingly, some of the ancient statues included in the virtual exhibition have been restored by the Friends of the Uffizi over the years.

ABOUT OUR COVER PHOTO: Rembrandt: Self-portrait as a Young Man. c1634 Rembrandt showed a life-long penchant for the self-portrait, as if he wished to document every stage of his career (about eighty self-portraits, three of them in the Uffizi, are known). Son of a rich miller from Leydon, Rembrandt left his native city early for The Hague, from there he moved in 1631 to Amsterdam. There he painted this self-portrait, which reveals a striking talent for psychological investigation. The young painter with the decided gaze wears a rich velvet gown adored by a precious collar. The work was donated to the Florentine Gerini family by Johann Wilelm, Palatine Elector of the Rhine, the husband of Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici (the Palatine Elector, known also by the Italianized name of Giovanni Guglielmo, who died in 1716, donated many preious works to the Medici collection.)

ABOUT OUR COVER PHOTO: ST. ELIGIUS AND KING CLOVIS The Florentine painter Empoli, also renowned for still lifes (two of which, restored in 1994, are in the Vasari Corridor at the Uffizi) painted this beautiful canvas for the altar of the Goldsmiths’ Guild in Via della Crocetta, now Via Laura. On June 25, 1614, the saint’s feast day, the altarpiece arrived at its destination. Empoli shows the honest Eligius, patron saint of goldsmiths, consigning to Clovis King of France two thrones made of the silver he was accused of having stolen. The personages wear sumptuous costumes of the times. Clovis in particular is dressed in blue velvet adorned with French-style gilded lilies and a satin mantle lined in fur. The precious objects on the shelf and the tools of the trade hanging on the coat rack evoke a typical Granducal workshop, or rather the famous Casino de San Marco where goldsmiths called to court from all over Europe worked. Karla Langedijk has suggested that the figure of the balding Eligius with beard and mustache is a portrait of the French sculpture Pietro Francavilla , accused like St. Eligius of appropriating precious materials. The page at far right may be a portrait of the French artist Jacques Callot, who worked at the Florentine court from 1612.

ABOUT OUR COVER PHOTO: Portrait of Sir Richard Southwell by Hans Holbein the Younger. Wood on oil. 1536 In 1620, Cosimo II de’ Medici, in a letter dated September 12, asked Thomas Howard, Duke of Arundel, for the gift of a portrait by Holbein, the great master from Augsburg who worked at the Tudor court from 1536. The portrait which arrived in Florence in April 1621, two months after Cosimo’s death, depicts a personage close to Henry VIII, Richard Southwell, one of the executors of the King’s will, 33 years old at the time, as can be read on the right. The original ebony frame is lost; remaining below the painting are four silver medallions bearing the coats of arms of the Medici, the Arundels, Southwells, and the name of the artist, evidently added later when the painting was sent as a gift to the Grand Duke. The portrait was painted at the time of Holbein’s full maturity. The artist investigates the imperturbable face with scrupulous accuracy: the chin already slightly flaccid, the deep scar under the fine bears, the coarse nose and thin lips. Luminous brushstrokes emphasize the folds in the sleeve and the jewels worn with nonchalance: a gold chain glimpsed under the black gown, the brooch on the beret, the rings.

ABOUT OUR COVER PHOTO:
Annunciation by definition means announcement and in this painting, the archangel Gabriel is announcing to Mary that she will bear a special child. He told her that his name would be Jesus meaning “savior”. The setting is in a Florentine Villa with mountains and water as the background. Landscapes were painted in various artworks simply as a background for human activity. It could sometimes represent a religious meaning as well. We can see that the angel is holding a lily which symbolizes virginity alongside with the landscape background. The light that Leonardo painted upon Mary portrays her as the main subject giving us that feel of sovereign emotion. Vanishing points are seen from a horizontal viewpoint within the painting as well that lead to the middle. However, seeing it in a vertical angel, the vanishing point is not located at the same spot, in fact, it is two thirds of the way up. Because of this mistake and several others, experts do not give much merit to Leonardo due to lack of perspective. Then again, Leonardo was only twenty years of age when he painted this and it is still known as one of his great works. As far as the wardrobe, Leonardo was influenced by Sandro Botticelli to clothe them in a renaissance style. He liked using dark colors such as red, green, and brown which is what Leonardo used to dress Mary and Angel Gabriel. In fact, Leonardo used much of what he sees as inspiration. For example, the wings on the angel is said to be wings from a bird that he saw soaring through the sky but, of course, had lengthened them.

The Annunciation has been painted as Christian representation done by artists such as Fra Angelico, Simone Martini, Il Tintoretto, so on and so forth. Some say that Leonardo completed the Annunciation painting on his own beginning with the drawing to the final brush strokes. However, there is confusion between others who analyzed his work because Verrocchio might have helped with the painting and asked Leonardo to paint the background and angel. This could be correct since the marble table in front of Mary is inscribed with a quote from the tomb of Piero and Giovanni de Medici. Verrocchio sculpted this tomb and placed it in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence.

Leonardo da Vinci, as an artist, loved painting landscape and everything he painted was for the purpose of his audience to feel some type of emotion. Throughout his studies, he was fascinated by knowing about the human body; the way muscles worked. He was also intrigued by birds and the mechanism of how they flew. As a child, while other kids would play in the fields, he walked around his town analyzing details. Leonardo spent most of his time painting but around the age of 65, he was asked to work as an engineer and therefore, found no more time to paint. He was asked in several requests to paint but he denied them all.

ABOUT OUR COVER PHOTO: Eleonora di Toledo with her son, Giovanni by Agnolo Bronzino - 1545 Eleonora di Toledo (1519-1562) married Cosimo I de’ Medici in 1539, and bore him eight children. Here she is shown with her first son, the second-born Giovanni (1543-1562), future cardinal. To this cherished son the court portrait painter Bronzino dedicated an individual portrait, also in the Tribuna. Wearing a coral pendant, an amulet against early death, Giovanni is show smiling, holding a goldfinch in his hand. Eleonora’s role as a mother is marked by the pomegranates embroidered o her dress, a symbol of fecundity which appears again on the ceiling of her chapel in Palazzo Vecchio, also frescoed by Bronzino. The brocade dress with Spanish embroidery is identical to the one found in 1857 inside the tomb of the Duchess in the Medici Chapel. The background landscape may show the Grand Duke’s dominions.

One of the most enduring relationships in Michelangelo’s life was his personal and professional entanglement with the powerful Medici family. The Medici were responsible for Michelangelo’s early education, some of his major commissions in Florence, and, ultimately, his exile from the city as an elderly man. This talk will take a comprehensive view of the influence of the Medici on Michelangelo’s art, life, and legacy.

Our Lecturer is Dr. Emily Fenichel is an Assistant Professor at Florida Atlantic University. She earned her PhD from the University of Virginia where her dissertation considered Michelangelo's images of the Virgin Mary in light of their iconographic ingenuity and their religious context. Currently, she is working on several projects, including a book on Michelangelo’s late period. More generally, her research examines the influence of theology, liturgy, and devotion on the art of the Early Modern Period in Italy.

Our cover photo is Michelangelo's "Tondo Doni."
