The Texas Jailhouse, (a.k.a )The Historic Anderson County Jail was built in 1931 to replace the pre-existing jail that had been built on the same site in 1879. It's Art Deco Style is locally rare, and was typically used as an architectural expression in the facades of public buildings. The old building was renovated to become a juvenile detention center until it's closing in 1996. In 1998, the bui

lding was added to the National Register of Historic Places- building #98000692. Except for county storage purposes, the building remained empty until it was purchased by a private party in 2013. Currently the building is being used as an event space and Art Gallery.

I'm watching the live surveillance footage on my phone and waiting to see how long it would take for something to show up. It was about 30 seconds! They seem to be nosy!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY!

(circa 1890)

Before this was the Anderson County Abstract Company building, it was the one of the first Anderson County Jails. It was convienantly located on the courthouse lawn. Of course, this building was not big enough to hold all the criminals, so the 1879 Jail was built across the street on Avenue A.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY! Avenue A (circa 1874).

After the construction of the railroad, there was a need for a road connecting Old Town to New Town. Avenue A was born and still lives to this day. A horse-drawn streetcar line was built to connect the courthouse and the railroad station, but it proved to be uneconomical and was sold to a small town called Dallas.

In 1875, this was printed in The Palestine Advocate (formerly the Trinity Advocate) newspaper: "This Avenue is an institution. It cements and links two hills and all the other hills together, so far as it relates to Palestine and it's prospective prosperity."

FLASHBACK FRIDAY commencing now! The past decade of living and working in the Historic Anderson County Jail (a.k.a Texas Jailhouse), we've researched and collected so much Palestine, Texas History. So, why not share?!

The photo is of the 1879 jail. It was the second jail built for Anderson County. It had an amazing clock tower! Every brick on this building was hand-made by Charles Elliot, a former slave who started his own Company. He also made bricks for many Downtown Palestine buildings.

This building also held hanging gallows where many criminals were executed.

I love this photo for many reasons--

1. It was taken almost 150 years ago.
2. The people are difficult to make out, but they are there! There's even a man on a horse.
3. This photo has the original footers, which still exist under our building!
