History isn’t just a record of the past — it’s a tool to understand who we are today and why our cultural practices continue to thrive. A powerful example of this is the Karankawa, an Indigenous people who lived along the Texas coast long before the state existed as we know it.

The Karankawa used piercings, tattoos, and body adornment as symbols of identity, strength, and spiritual connection. For them, every mark had a purpose: representing the transition to adulthood, protection in war, or connection to the spirits and nature. Their bodies were their story, their shield, and their language.

And while today piercing has become a modern art form, its roots run deep in this land. In Texas, piercing isn’t a recent trend , it’s an ancestral tradition that has been part of the people here for centuries.

Knowing these stories allows us to see that what we do today , beautify, express, heal, or connect — isn’t new. It’s part of a cultural legacy that lives on in every piece of jewelry we choose and in every person who decides to modify their body as an act of identity.
