Hurricane Nolo has been hanging out just south of the Big Island for the last couple days. Fortunately we haven't got any of the extreme weather that was predicted. Just a lack of sun for our solar. So I'm working on the lanai today instead of turning on a lamp!

I wanted to take this Opihi Honu to the next level by creating the underside of the turtle shell!

Opihi are Hawaiian limpets and are found on lava rocks in tidal zones. The outside of the shell is rough and dark to blend in with the rocks. I hand polish through that protective layer to reveal the pearlecence underneath. I do this to all the Opihi shells you see in my work. They are a huge part of Hawaiian culture and as such have harvest protection laws. The law states that any Opihi smaller than 1.25 inches tip to tip must be left to grow and repopulate. This law is sometimes misunderstood, so here's the link:

This beauty is the manifestation of something I've had in my mind's eye for months.
I acquired the center coral fragment and knew it was destined to be in one of my wraps. I just didn't know how!
Well yesterday I jumped in to make my vision come to life! To go with and frame the central coral, I used antique, undyed pink coral beads. All put together with polished brass.
