21 DAYS LEFT!

Did you know: The making of JAWS was almost as dramatic as the movie. The shoot ran long and over budget. The script was still being written as scenes were filmed. Steven Spielberg, still a young director, woke each day fearing he would be fired. The mechanical shark sank to the bottom of the ocean. And on one particularly frustrating day, the production went through more than...21 rewrites.

THE SHARK IS BROKEN brings that legendary behind-the-scenes story to the stage.

THE SHARK IS BROKEN
By Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon
Directed by Laura Moore
Starring Cameron Vargas, Scott Morehead, and Tim Moore
October 9 - November 15, 2026
Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes with no intermission
Tickets: pagosacenter.org | 970.731.SHOW (7469)

FADE IN: The open ocean, 1974. Production on JAWS is delayed...again. Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider are crammed into a too-small boat, at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Alcohol flows, egos collide, and tempers flare in this comedy about the making of a movie that nearly sank before it became a classic.

A patron asked: Where is Bruce the shark now? Naturally, we went looking.

He’s hanging above the main escalator at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.

The 25-foot, 1,208-pound shark spent 25 years in a California junkyard before undergoing a seven-month restoration by Greg Nicotero, best known for his work on “The Walking Dead.”

He isn’t one of the three mechanical sharks used during filming. All three were destroyed after production. This fourth Bruce was cast from the same mold for Universal Studios and displayed there for 15 years before finding his permanent home at the Academy Museum.

So yes, Bruce is on exhibit and still stealing the scene. 🦈

Come see “The Shark Is Broken” in Pagosa Springs, October 9–November 15. This sharp comedy dives behind the scenes of “Jaws,” following Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider as they bond, bicker, drink, gamble, and pray for the shoot to end while the shark prop keeps breaking down. None of them know they’re making movie history.

The shark was the star. The shark was also a problem.

The mechanical shark that became one of cinema’s most iconic creations was built with a wooden framework, animatronics, a polyurethane skin, and plenty of paint and sand to make him look real. He was also famously temperamental. When Bruce refused to cooperate, Steven Spielberg had to find a new way to make audiences fear what they couldn’t see.

Three movie stars. One broken shark. Nothing left to do but turn on each other.

Season subscriptions and individual tickets go on sale to everyone soon. Watch for the announcement.

Before she became the first victim in Jaws, Susan Backlinie had already faced a Japanese submarine in Steven Spielberg’s 1941. So the shark wasn’t her first bad day at sea, just the one that made movie history.

At our recent season announcement party, 2026 summer season ticket holders got the first crack at our 2026–2027 Fall/Winter Season, including The Shark Is Broken.

Season subscriptions and individual tickets go on sale to everyone soon. We’ll announce the moment the box office opens, so keep your eyes on the water and be ready to climb aboard the Orca.
