Valley Girls Book Club read for May. James by Percival Everett. It makes me want to read Huckleberry Finn again. An interesting take on the story shown through Jim’s eyes - Much like Beowulf and Grendel. My issue with the book was the idea of code talking between the enslaved. It goes on the assumption that all enslaved Black people could understand one another. Which is not true. Harriet Tubman, who grew up in Maryland had a difficult time understanding the Gullah Geechee in South Carolina. Blacks from all over Africa were enslaved & brought to North America, and they all had their own dialects, their own language. To gloss over the fact that they could easily understand one another is bothersome. It was enjoyable, so if you’re just reading it for a different perspective on Huckleberry Finn - have fun.

Sharing with - she posted a Fuzzy Wuzzy soap ad - I commented that I still had mine. I had others when I was young, but I used them until they were gone and got the special surprise inside! Every time you used the soap, and let it dry in the air, it would grow fuzz. It was so much fun as a kid to see this happen, and then to use it all up and find a surprise inside. Here is the last one that I owned, that I could not bear to use up. It sits in a plexiglass box in my bathroom. The box that it came in, had a little punch out that you could use to stand Fuzzy Wuzzy up in. You see that in the first photo.

Congratulations to granddaughter Savannah on graduating from high school with a specialty in art. So many adventures await her in the near future, and then settling down at MassArt for a few! It was wonderful spending the day with you! I love the photo with Bob - he graduated 50 years ago!

Summertime! If you’re lucky - this time of year means vacations and travel. Perhaps visiting a place that you have gone year after year or exploring a place you have never been. In either case I hope the next three months hold some relaxation, some joy, and some time in the sun. This fabulous “suitcase“ is from Cindy and is an absolutely charming coloring book.

This is another cautionary tale, similar to “always look in the box“. Many months ago I went to an estate sale where I found a very, very nice selection of dollhouse furniture for a friend that was furnishing two doll houses for her grandchildren. I also found this darling hutch that was missing a back leg. The estate company still had lots to sell after the Sunday afternoon that I was there and they said there was going to be another sale at some point. I kept waiting and watching, because I was ready to go back into the basement and dig around the boxes with the dollhouse furniture in it so that I could find the leg to this cute breakfront. I waited months and kept watching. Nothing. I finally gave up. I brought the piece into my friend’s house, her granddaughter was there and I said if we have a couple toothpicks, I can make a new leg for the back of this piece of furniture. And I explained the situation with the second round of the Estate Sale never happening, etc. etc. Her granddaughter, Eliza was shaking the little piece of furniture. There was a rattling inside the doors. She opened up the doors, and low and behold there was the leg. I just laughed. So again, always look inside.
