Robert MATHIEU

Adjustable Floor Lamp, France, 1950s

This rare and highly architectural floor lamp is a quintessential example of Robert Mathieu’s innovative design approach, seamlessly blending mechanical ingenuity with refined aesthetics. Designed and produced in France during the early 1950s, the lamp is documented in the April 1952 issue of Mobilier et Decoration, one of the most influential French design publications of the postwar era (Documentation provided by Docantic)

The structure is composed of a slender brass arm mounted on a sculptural black-lacquered star-shaped base. At the core of this base is a solid brass sphere that acts as a pivotal joint, ingeniously allowing the entire armature to rotate a full 360 degrees. This rotating ball mechanism not only provides visual intrigue but offers full adjustability, enabling the lamp to be oriented according to the desired function, be it reading, accent lighting, or ambiance.

The stem features a telescopic adjustment mechanism that allows the height to be varied smoothly. The top segment supports a pivoting brass elbow, which leads to the distinctive diabolo-shaped lampshade. The shade, faithfully re-fabricated in off-white linen to match the original design, enhances the lamp’s sculptural profile and provides a warm, diffused light.

The head of the lamp is also pivoting, allowing further flexibility in directing the beam. This multi-directional adjustability speaks to Mathieu’s engineering background and his obsession with functional elegance.

The original black lacquer on the base shows beautiful aging consistent with its period, while the brass retains its warm patina. The result is a piece that remains both functionally versatile and visually compelling.

This exceptional bronze coffee table by Australian-born, UK-based artist and designer Charles Trevelyan exemplifies the tension between organic growth and sculptural permanence that characterizes his work. An exceptional and highly sophisticated pair of French modernist cabinets attributed to Maurice Champion (1899–1962), one of the leading designers of the post-war French decorative arts movement.

The attribution to Maurice Champion is supported by the distinctive bronze base, identical to examples illustrated in numerous contemporary issues of the prestigious French design magazine Mobilier et Décoration, documenting Champion's production throughout the mid-1950s.

Roger MUHL (1929–2008)

Provenance: Private collection, France. Retains the original Galerie de Paris exhibition label on the reverse, inscribed "Muhl – Déc. 1960 – Neige – No. 615."

Painted during one of Roger Muhl's most sought-after early periods, Neige is a beautifully balanced abstract landscape that captures the silence and luminosity of a snow-covered countryside. Executed in December 1960, the composition is built from softly defined geometric forms suggesting distant houses emerging through the winter mist.

Working with a restrained palette of warm ivories, soft greys, pale ochres, and muted earth tones, Muhl creates an atmosphere of remarkable serenity. Thick, textured brushstrokes alternate with delicate translucent passages, allowing the painting to breathe with light while subtly dissolving the boundaries between architecture and landscape.

The Galerie de Paris label on the reverse precisely dates the painting to December 1960, placing it among Roger Muhl's documented early gallery works from the beginning of the decade that established his reputation as one of the leading French painters of lyrical abstraction and atmospheric landscape in the post-war period. Charles Po***ck Executive Armchair, 1984

A sophisticated and highly comfortable executive armchair designed by Charles Po***ck and produced by Knoll International in 1984.

The chair features a generously padded, tufted black leather seat and backrest mounted on a black lacquered metal frame. Designed for executive comfort, it incorporates a swivel mechanism, rolling casters, and a reclining back that allows the sitter to adjust the seating position. The polished chrome five-star base provides both stability and visual contrast to the black finish.

The frame and arms are finished in black lacquered metal, creating a striking contrast with the polished chrome accents visible on the five-star swivel base. Mounted on original casters, the chair retains its full executive functionality while exhibiting a timeless aesthetic characteristic of high-end American office furniture of the late twentieth century.

The underside retains the original manufacturer’s labels dated August 31, 1984, confirming production by Knoll International.

Exceptional and extremely rare pair of Maxime Old chairs from the Marhaba Hotel in Morocco.
The chairs has been made by Maxime Old in France in 1953 for this particular hotel.
Fully re-upholstered in new camel hued leather.
The wood bases are fully restored and refinished. The chairs have been reupholstered but we kept the original leather. Pictures upon request.
