By the end of 1942, Soviet troops marching from Stalingrad had rushed towards Rostov to cut off the Germans' escape route out of the Caucasus.

The commander of the 16th Panzer Grenadier Division, Major-General Gerhard von Schwerin got instructions to pull his division back to Rostov by 10 Jan 1943.

The steel giants of Panzer-Abteilung 116 of the 16th Panzer Grenadier Division started to move out.

Part of this steel assault wedge were the Panzer IIIs of Oberfeldwebel Hans Bunzel's platoon.

Hans Bunzel was a seasoned soldier who had served as a tanker since the very beginning in 1934.

Shortly before the start of the campaign in Russia Bunzel became a tank commander and a section leader.

Bunzel's platoon would see fierce fighting against the Soviets with their T-34 tanks!

During WWII, British tank commanders were frequently advised that naval tactics could be deployed effectively by tanks. This suggestion, however, was not always followed.

Lieutenant John Reginald Gorman of the Irish Guards, on the other hand, took such advice to heart.

Gorman's company of M4 Sherman tanks were part of the British offensive intended to seize Caen and the Bourguébus Ridge during Operation Goodwood. These were vitally important strategic points in the Allied drive to retake France.

Gorman's men were concerned. They possessed Sherman tanks, but there were reports that the Germans had something far better in the form of the 70 tone Tiger II, also known as the King Tiger.

When asked what they would do if they encountered a King Tiger, Gorman replied, "The only thing we can do is utilise naval tactics - if the 88mm cannon is pointed away from us, we shall have to use the speed of the Sherman and ram it."

Here is the how the battle unfolded.
