University of Mississippi Sculpture Society Student Organization at the University of Mississippi Meetings involve discussions for possible field trips to museums and conferences.

The University of Mississippi Sculpture Society (UMSS) is an organization of advanced sculpture students and is led by Associate Professor Durant Thompson. The group meets once a month to promote awareness of sculptural exhibitions and events, employment opportunities, and educational options. They also choose visiting artists’ to invite to the school to demonstrate through workshops and give lec

tures. UMSS holds its own metal casting event at least once a year where the community is invited to donate materials and participate in casting activities.

“Creatures of Habit” is an MFA Thesis Exhibition by that reflects on the immense impact we as humans have on our environment with the tremendous amount of waste we create. Ellis confronts the viewer with a glimpse of the sheer amount of trash produced in just one community, as the majority of the trash items used in the work were sourced from Meek Hall and the Oxford area. Dogs are also a central figure in the installation, showing the struggle of adapting to and living in a world shaped by humans.

The dogs, the viewer, and the artist all embody the show title, as dogs survive and thrive on routine, we as humans compulsively consume and discard, and as Ellis collects and highly regards the very things we waste.

Sight, sound, and smell come together in this installation to compel the viewer and artist to consider their own place in this environment.

“Warp and Weft - Urdimbre y Trama” is a MFA Thesis Exhibition by that discusses stages of growth in early marital relationships within the modern home, while also exploring the challenges of intercultural marriage. This body of work displays the balance of differences in upbringing, ethnicity, culture, and religion between her and her husband, in five common household scenes. Among the many materials and symbolism Wes uses to create these scenes, weaving and corn are prominent, depicting the way that her and her husband have woven together their relationship and the common ground they have found along the way. Wes’s intent for the viewer is an immersive experience that they can reflect on when returning to their own home, finding common ground in their own relationships.

“Agathos and Kakos in Motley” is a BFA exhibition by Celique Williams Set within the fictional land of “Gammalot”, Celique’s work depicts the battle between good and evil, using ambiguous figures that interact with the environment and the viewer. The primary figures that rule his fictional world are jesters, created from forged steel. Dynamic positions emphasize whimsy, movement, and form, while color highlights the more impactful parts of the figure. The scale of the work allows the viewer to have different experiences with the work, piecing together their own story.

“Epigenetic” is a BFA Thesis exhibition by sculpture student that explores the complexities of trauma and memory through familial imagery. Traditional “Southern Belle” objects and a southern color palette are used to set the scene of everyday domestic spaces, while ci******es, razor blades, and the ghostly images created through cyanotypes reflect the fragmentation in the facade. Rory’s aim with her work is to create a visual language that feels familiar yet transformative, inviting viewers to connect with their own memories and personal histories.

UM Sculpture worked hard last week preparing for and installing the 2025 MSA Select, Oxford Exhibition. Such an amazing range of work and incredible talent! Swipe for prep/install shots and a little video tour of the work. If you’re in Oxford stop in for a real tour of the exhibition! Gallery 130 is located in Meek Hall and is open to the public 8am -5pm. The show runs until February 14th with a reception from 4:30-6pm on February 6th.
