GRADUATION SPOTLIGHT: Nandy Shemwell

Nandy Shemwell is a theatre student at Oak Island Theatre, where he has been developing his skills in performance, collaboration, and production work since August 2023. However, he began working with Grae in late 2022, gaining early experience in theatre before officially becoming a student in the program.

After transferring, Nandy plans to attend Western Kentucky University to study Musical Theatre. He aims to further develop his performance training and expand his skills in acting, singing, and stage work in a collegiate theatre environment.

Oak Island genuinely won’t be the same without Nandy. Who else is going to wear a tie to paint a set or have a witty comeback when we make a comment about said tie? In all seriousness, Nandy made Oak Island feel like home & it feels as if a family member is moving out. But we know whatever he chooses to do next, he’ll bring that same wit to the next place & find a place that feels like home. 💙🫶🏻

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Ballard Branham

Ballard will be attending Webster’s Sargent Conservatory and majoring in Musical Theatre.

He has been a member of Oak Island Theatre since his freshman year of high school and has acted, worked behind the scenes, and made lifelong friends in many plays and musicals. He received the 2023 Acorn Award.

If someone is singing in the Humanities building, it’s usually Ballard. We are grateful to have been his concert hall for the last 4 years through various projects, performances, classes, and hangouts.

There will be no theatre camps at OCTC this summer. But that shouldn’t stop you from being a part of other performing opportunities!

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Rayla Chaffin

Although Rayla was only with us for one year, she made a great impact on the program onstage and off. She challenged herself with technical theatre projects as costume design, prop creation, and scenic painting, as well as being brave enough to step onstage in three different roles for Peter Pan.

Where ever Rayla goes in this next chapter whether it be performing, technical, dramaturgy, or curation.... we know she'll make us proud!

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: Lily Berry

Lily Berry is transferring to Murray State University to pursue a degree in Theatre and Arts Administration. Over the years, she has been a part of many Oak Island Theatre productions.

A highlight for Lily was acting alongside her brother in the Oak Island Theatre/Bluegrass Community Theatre collaboration production of Bluegrass Christmas Carol. "It was so nice being able to watch him grow as an actor in real time," said Lily about playing siblings opposite her brother.

We couldn't be prouder of Lily as she leaves The Acorn Theatre and onto bigger stages. Congrats, Lily!

🖤 Introducing members of our spooktacular cast 🖤

Ava Hall is currently a cosmetology student at The Salon Professional Academy and working part time at the Owensboro Museum of Science and History alongside other fun, odd jobs. This will be her fifth show with Oak Island Theatre. This show truly embraces sticking by your beliefs and learning to accept others and yourself for who they are. Life would be so bland if everyone was the same! She’d like to thank her parents and her boyfriend, Caden, for always supporting her in all her decisions and being there for her in so many unimaginable ways. She’s also like to thank Grae Greer for always believing in her and helping her grow in her skills and confidence.
