EUREKA DAY, Jonathan Spector's play about one school with too many principles, makes its Central Florida debut in a production from the award-winning Ensemble Company, opening Friday, September 4th!

The Eureka Day School in Berkeley, California, is a bastion of progressive ideals: representation, acceptance, social justice. In weekly meetings Eureka Day’s five board members develop and update policy to preserve this culture of inclusivity, reaching decisions only by consensus. But when a mumps outbreak threatens the Eureka community, facts become subjective and every solution divisive, leaving the school’s leadership to confront the central question of our time: How do you build consensus when no one can agree on truth?

“Gaspingly funny!” – New York Magazine

“Spector… extract[s] comic gold from the little tugs-of-war for control among the members of the committee. This comedy of manners yields to a serious probing of interpersonal responsibility and the limits of consideration... Even as it stakes out a moral position on its subject, Eureka Day avoids the kind of lording dismissal that, in too much of our social-media lives, has become epidemic.” – Time Out New York

THROWBACK THURSDAY:

Eleanor Burgess's THE NICETIES put The Ensemble Company on the map back in September 2019 during our debut season. The production starred Roberta Emerson as Zoe and Missy Barnes as Professor Janine Bosko and was directed by producing artistic director Matthew MacDermid.

Matt Palm of the Orlando Sentinel said: "THE NICETIES is compelling, issue-oriented theater at its finest. Burgess is firing on all cylinders as she presents a simple opening — a college student getting feedback on a paper from her history professor — and then explodes her premise into a dizzying examination of race in contemporary America."

In his year-end Best of Orlando Theater honors, THE NICETIES was nominated for Leading Actress in a Drama (both Barnes and Emerson) as well as Direction of a Drama for MacDermid. It was named as one of 2019's Top Productions.

THROWBACK THURSDAY:

In November 2023, Taylor Mac's absurd realism play about a changing America, HIR, took to The Ensemble Company's stage. Directed by Tara Kromer, and featuring an extraordinary company of actors, HIR was an audacious production that set a standard for the type of storytelling our company chooses to produce time and again.

HIR was brought to life by Jeanine Henry as Paige, Emmitt Williams as Max, Daniel Molina as Isaac, and Thomas Muniz as Arnold.
