My mom, sister, these hajichi mugs, and I on our way to Gardena, CA today for the 7th Annual Okinawan Craft Fair this Saturday!

Hajichi was a rite of passage for Okinawan women, to garner protection and to mark key moments in time, with hand tattoos distinct to the islands. When colonial Japan took over Okinawa in 1879, the beginning of cultural erasure started taking place, including the banning and vilifying of hajichi. But a resurgence and revitalization effort of hajichi has taken place in recent times! Those of us with Okinawan heritage have a yearning to connect with each other, while honoring, protecting, & advocating for our culture and language to make sure it's remembered for generations to come.
