Lots of performing! It was good to be the king for the 2025 Charlottesville Opera gala at the luxurious Farmington Country Club with several talented singers and an amazing pianist on Friday. Then the Virginia Chorale braved the flood waters to sing David Lang’s new major choral work, Poor Hymnal, on Saturday and Sunday. Finally, I was honored to sing our National Anthem and “Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean”, at the 250th Anniversary Celebration of the U.S. Navy at the Virginia War Memorial this morning. My beautiful girlfriend and history teacher Deborah Seraydarian came with me to Richmond today.

Maestro David Grandis is doing great things with the W&M Symphony Orchestra, and he invites me over to have some fun with them. This is regarded as the best bass aria ever written, Giuseppe Verdi’s “Ella giammai m’amò” from his opera Don Carlos. But if the maestro wants the original French, j’oblige, so this is “Elle ne m’aime pas”, which I actually prefer to the Italian.

Performed during the annual Spring Concert. The Spring Concert features a major orchestral piece and is the culmination of the academic year.—G. Verdi: "Ella...

Thanks, William Adams at Triangle Sings!

“From his very first entrance from the back of the house through the audience, Branch Fields established himself, and Leporello, as a major physical presence in the opera. In fact, his carriage, his facial expressions, and his manner of interacting with the rest of the cast, evoked memories of the great Samuel Ramey. More impressively, Mr. Fields’ singing also elicited memories of Ramey. His diction was impeccable, even during rapid syllabic passages. His tone was lush and rich but with focus and clarity that easily filled the hall. He is a gifted physical comedian with a delightfully expressive face, athletic eyebrows, and a hint of slapstick as he crawls about the stage and cowers under small tables. His performance of Leporello was complete and a masterclass for those looking to take on the role.”

Had a great 3 show run as Leporello in Don Giovanni with Greensboro Opera. Great working with a colleague I met when he was in his undergrad at UNC-G, Sidney Outlaw, as Don Giovanni!

I had the honor of performing the French National Anthem (La Marsaillaise) at the 200th anniversary of General Lafayette’s farewell address to Williamsburg, reenacted yesterday on the steps of The Courthouse, in Colonial Williamsburg. It was well attended and beautifully executed by William Schermerhorn and his team at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Margaret Woods sang our National Anthem beautifully. Of course, Mark Schneider as Gen. Lafayette was the star of the show. His portrayal of Lafayette is so expert and fun to watch.

Another magical trip to Bozeman, MT for a concert with Opera Montana honoring Anne and Dennis Wentz, who are such a dear couple to me after the many times I’ve stayed with them during productions there. Sang Gremin’s aria from Tchaikovsky’s Evgeny Onegin with a chamber ensemble, and “Impossible Dream”, with the dialogue leading up to it, in collaboration with such talented artists, all in debt to the generosity of Anne and Dennis.
