I had to get the book.

Mark Seliger photographed Kurt Cobain right here at Park Trades Center on October 27, 1993 — reportedly some of the last major professional portraits of him. Later that same day, Nirvana went over to Wings Stadium and played Kalamazoo.

Seliger had Studio 309 — the space I work in now — along with 309B next door, and another spot farther down the hall where he did his photo processing.

There’s something pretty damn cool about knowing images that became part of rock-and-roll history were made in these rooms.

Different artist. Different medium. Same old building.

Yeah. I had to have the book.

She brought me a handful of images she loved and asked me to merge them into one piece that felt like hers. That’s always the fun part—taking separate ideas and making them live together in the skin.

Today was outline day. Next time we’ll get into the shading and color. And yes… there will be purple.

Shout out to amazing artists. ❤️

This little guy came from the wonderful artist I’ve been getting my amber necklaces from. Then he made this little critter, and I knew I had to have him.

Pig’s tooth stinger, amber, bog wood, crystal quartz wings, labradorite eyes… and even the pollen pockets on his back legs are yellow amber.

And the glass cube underneath him is by Zam at Glass Art Kalamazoo.
I love being surrounded by things made by people who put this much imagination and handwork into what they do. There’s something special about owning a piece where you can still see the artist in it.

Support artists. Buy weird little treasures. Keep beautiful things in the world.

Her husband gave her some money for a new tattoo and told her, “Don’t just fill in around the others—start something new.”

So she did.

She brought me her idea, we played with it a little, and got a really good start on this floral piece. There’s a lot more to come, but I’m already loving the way it moves with her arm.

Work in progress.

Brody came in with his design idea — a whole sleeve of nature scenes, layered together like little pieces of a bigger story.
My job is to take that idea, figure out how it actually needs to flow on an arm, and bring it to life in skin.
He’s a lineman. Sometimes he’s at the top of a pole in the middle of nowhere, sometimes in heavy equipment, sometimes doing storm cleanup. Always around power lines. It’s the kind of work where you really can’t afford a mistake.
Most of us don’t think much about the people keeping us connected until the power goes out.
We got a damn good start on this one.
Work in progress.

Church street next to park trades- you can still get in the parking lot from Kalamazoo.
Still working, even on a Saturday.
To the east I saw tents, they’ve got something going on. South west, it looks like westerns got $15 parking spots for something. Is it just kids moving in? Or is there a game later?

A little homework with dinner.

I’m excited about these. Sam wants to eventually build toward a leg sleeve, with some work on her arm too. I still suggested we start in smaller sections and work our way up. Big projects don’t have to happen all at once.

What has me especially excited is that we’re going to do these flowers larger than I normally would, and all in black and grey. More room for shape, depth, texture, and those soft transitions.

This is the kind of homework I don’t mind doing.

It’s really fun watching a few photographs and some pencil marks slowly turn into something that’s going to live on skin.
