The arts can offer space to grapple with what it means to be human and to envision pathways for social justice.

Join the English & Creative Writing Department and the Latino & Latin American Studies Department for Poetry and Justice, a two-part series that explores how poets harness the power of language to articulate their own consciousness of experience and craft narratives that can pressure who is allowed to “speak” and under what conditions.

Part one of this two-poet series will host former Springfield, MA poet laureate María Luisa Arroyo to explore the importance of poetry for raising awareness of social injustices and community healing. She will share from her landmark "Gathering Words/Recogiendo Palabras" to consider how the language we use can shape understandings of domestic violence and resilience.

Stop by Marano Campus Center, Room 323 on Wednesday, October 7 from 1:50pm to 2:45pm to hear from María! Free and open to all.

Join the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures for a conversation with scholar Anastasia Valecce! While on campus, Anastasia will present her forthcoming book Disobedient Women: Decolonial Movements of Afro-Queer Puerto Rican Artists.

The book examines how Caribbean artists use artistic practice as a form of resistance against colonial, racial, and gendered structures. Her presentation will highlight Afro-queer expression, feminist resistance, visual culture and the politics of visibility, while considering how artistic practices in Puerto Rico connect with broader movements challenging patriarchy, heteronormativity and colonial legacies.

Stop by Marano Campus Center, Room 132 on Monday, October 5th from 5 to 7PM to join in on this fascinating and vital conversation. Free and open to all.

A little R&B, a little jazz, a little pop, and a whole lot of soul.

Kings Return is coming to campus! This four-piece vocal group takes pride in crafting a diverse yet supremely cohesive a ca****la sound. The blend of their unique vocal timbres is so rich and so smooth that, at times, it sounds more like a full choir than four men. They take full advantage of the genre-mixing aspects of a ca****la music. Their brand of R&B is entwined with free moments of jazz, soulful bursts of gospel, and bright touches of pop—all built on a solid, classical foundation. Composed of tenor Vaughn Faison, bass Gabe K***a, tenor JE McKissic, and baritone Jamall Williams, the Dallas-based quartet has since captured the hearts of millions of fans in-person and online.

Opening numbers will be performed by the Oswego High School Chamber Singers and the Oswego State Singers.

This event is FREE for SUNY Oswego students and students K-College; link below for tickets.

WOW!

Dialogues Across Time is a truly showstopping exhibition. Showcasing the artwork of artists Juan Perdiguero and Marc Hungerbühler, it explores the concepts of control and surrender, permanence and impermanence, and the tension between what endures and what dissolves.

See it in Tyler Art Gallery before it closes on October 7th!

At Boynton’s Department Store, the future is here. That is, if the future had happened in 1968.

Robotic Companions (RCs) Ruby and Charlie want nothing more than to be purchased by a human family and brought to a loving home. But as RC appliances, they have no control over when this happens. Ruby and Charlie wait patiently, anxiously, eagerly, imagining the day when they might be bought… until a brand-new 6th generation RC, Violet, arrives at the appliance store. Violet seems to feel and understand things that Ruby and Charlie do not, fueling deep uncertainty in their otherwise ordinary lives. Then, when Charlie is finally purchased and taken away, Violet desperately tries to sway Ruby towards escape, rebellion, and the dream of revolution. Even as she is moved into the clearance section, Ruby still wishes for a family, while Violet risks everything for a taste of freedom.

Written by Dr. Bella Poynton and directed by Jonel Langenfeld, The Appliance Department runs from Wednesday, October 14th through Sunday, October 18th. A full list of show dates and times is below. Grab your tickets through the link below; tickets are FREE for SUNY Oswego students.

This week, theatre artist and playwright Erin Layton came to campus to perform her one-woman show “Magdalen.” While she was here, she spoke with History students, led a workshop for Theatre students, and brought this truly unforgettable and thought-provoking show to our stage.

We wanted to give a huge shoutout to everyone who attended the performance and the workshops, and all of the folks in the theatre department who made this performance possible.

And of course, our deepest gratitude to Erin for bringing this show, her expertise, and her tremendous creativity and care to our campus and to our community.
