The Oswego Speedway, located in Oswego, NY, was built in 1951 when original owners Harry, George, and William Caruso converted the one time Wine Creek Horse Track into a 3/8 mile dirt auto racing facility. The track was paved during 1952 and remained a 3/8 mile track until 1961 when it was enlarged to its current 5/8 mile size. The Oswego Speedway has been a continuously run weekly race track since it opened in August of 1951. The Speedway has undergone vast capital improvements over the course of its 60 plus years of existence and updates are constantly being made to keep it a state-of-the-art racing facility. In 2011, the Speedway's spacious VIP suites were all beautifully updated, a new digital scoring tower was erected, and fresh paint was added as far as the eye could see. Not to mention, several sections of the Gary Witter Memorial Rear Grandstand were reconstructed. In racing circles Oswego Speedway is mentioned as the "Indy of the East" as no fewer than a dozen past and present competitors have competed at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway including two-time Indy 500 champion Gordon Johncock, along with former Budwesier International Classic Champions Bentley Warren, Joe Gosek, and Davey Hamilton. The unique configuration of sweeping turns and a wide racing surface make two and three abreast racing a common sight at Oswego Speedway. Steel walls surround the outside and inside of the racing surface making "The Steel Palace" a truly one of a kind facility. The infield area of the Speedway is almost completely paved for competitors. Steel grandstands line both the front and rear of the track with complete seating capacity in excess of 15,000 people. Most of the front grandstands are covered by a roof and protected by a safety screen. The third and fourth turns of the original 3/8 mile track were re-paved in 2004 and now gives the track two unique configurations to host a variety of different racecars. Oswego Speedway's events are scheduled on Saturday nights from May to September with most starting times at 6:30pm. Special events and races at the beginning or end of the season may start earlier. The Budwesier International Classic 200 is held on Sunday of Labor Day Weekend and culminates a week-long celebration of racing and other track activities.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Oswego Speedway Hall of Famer and two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Gordon Johncock at the age of 90.

Long before becoming one of the great names in Indianapolis 500 history, Johncock was a standout in Supermodified racing, including right here at Oswego Speedway. The Hastings, Michigan native scored three feature victories at the Steel Palace between 1962 and 1963 and collected 11 top-five finishes before making the move to Champ Car racing in 1964.

Just one year later, Johncock made his Indianapolis 500 debut and finished fifth in 1965. He would go on to build a legendary career at Indianapolis, winning the 500 in 1973 before returning to Victory Lane in 1982 following his unforgettable late-race battle with Rick Mears. Johncock also captured the 1976 USAC Championship Car title.

His place in Oswego Speedway history was formally recognized in 1998, when Johncock was inducted as a member of the Speedwayโ€™s original Hall of Fame class.

From his early days in Supermodifieds to twice drinking the milk at Indianapolis, Gordon Johncock left an incredible mark on American auto racing, and we are proud that Oswego Speedway was part of his story.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Johncock family, his friends, and everyone throughout the racing community mourning his loss.

Rest in peace, Gordon. ๐Ÿ

The entire Oswego Speedway family joins the Supermodified racing community in profound sadness as we mourn the passing of Jim Shirey of Ohio.

A veteran driver, car owner, builder, fan, and longtime supporter of Supermodified racing, Jim dedicated much of his life to the sport he loved. Whether behind the wheel, fielding a car, or supporting races from the grandstands, his passion for Supermodified racing was evident at tracks across the country, including Oswego Speedway.

Jim made numerous winged and non-winged Supermodified starts at the Speedway, including eight appearances in the International Classic during the 1980s and 1990s, followed by one final appearance in 2001. With many winged Supermodified victories to his credit, including in ISMA competition, he was also the 1994 Hy-Miler Nationals champion and a Hall of Famer at both Lorain and Sandusky Speedways.

His unique No. 72 and V2 Supermodifieds were a familiar sight at racetracks for many years, and his support of Oswego Speedway and Supermodified racing will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jimโ€™s wife, Beth, his children, Eric, Kevin, and Danny, and all of his family and friends.

Jim will be greatly missed and fondly remembered for his contributions to the sport. ๐Ÿ
