For 70 years, Ossining-based Westchester Ballet Company (WBC), one of the longest-running regional nonprofit youth ballet companies in the United States, has served our county. WBC, made up of 100 young dancers from across 17 towns and villages in Westchester and Putnam counties, is driven by the belief that the arts are essential for our youth, that dance in particular instills confidence, provid

es foundational well-being, and strengthens our shared community. In addition to cultivating and showcasing dance as an art form, our mission calls on us to create accessibility—that means affordable/no cost access to its performances and affordable/no cost access to school-aged children who would like to dance with WBC. We believe that by eliminating these financial barriers we can further diversify this art form, create meaningful opportunities for our youth, and promote positive social change in our community. For decades WBC’s Nutcracker was hosted by the Westchester County Center in White Plains, attracting an aggregate audience of 150,000+ since 1996. In 2021 Lehman Center for the Performing Arts began hosting our holiday performances.

“FIRST POSITION” IS ALL ABOUT ARTS ENRICHMENT, COMMUNITY OUTREACH, AND BUILDING A NETWORK OF SUPPORT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Westchester Ballet Company, in collaboration with our community partner Rising Above Boundaries, is currently running a free 12-week ballet program for children 6-9 years of age in Ossining, New York. The spring program began with an orientation on March 27 and runs through June 19, 2023. The weekly, one-hour classes are taught by Bieje Chapman and assisted by Westchester Ballet Company Senior Company dancer Kennedy Keane.

The goal of First Position is to provide children in the community a robust and authentic introduction to ballet so that they might consider it as a pathway for their childhood. Over the past two years, nine young dancers who we have met through our community outreach programming in Ossining have auditioned and been cast in the Company’s production of The Nutcracker. Westchester Ballet Company has provided financial aid and scholarship opportunities for these young dancers so that the addition of ballet as an extracurricular pursuit puts no additional financial burden on their families.

Thank you Kemi Pogue for the opportunity to meet and work with the wonderful children and parents in the RAB program.

"Got My Wings" is a ballet set to an original score composed and performed by Daniel Blake, with choreography by Tomiko Magario. Following each performance, a panel of formerly incarcerated men and women will share their experiences and reflect on living and coping while in prison.

Daniel Blake was inspired to create “Got My Wings” by the personal and spiritual journey of Jarvis Jay Masters, an innocent man on death row in San Quentin State Prison. Masters tells his story in "That Bird Has My Wings", a memoir written in solitary confinement. While in prison, Jarvis Jay Masters has become a Buddhist and an author. Blake has been able to contact and converse with Masters, developing a relationship despite Masters’ incarceration.

“My heart was opened by his achievement,” says Blake. “That he could write his book in solitary confinement, that he could become connected to his core humanity in those circumstances – it is a deep testament to the potential of the human spirit.”

Choreographer Tomiko Magario describes the ballet as “in service to Blake’s music.” Talking about her creative process, she says that many of the shapes and gestures of the piece were developed in rehearsals. The young dancers of the Westchester Ballet were “open,” they “did not hide behind technique.” Magario wanted to maintain the honest feeling behind the movements. “My job was to make it cohesive,” she said.

That Bird Has My Wings has been selected for Oprah’s Book Club in 2022. While the book is a narrative about Jarvis Jay Masters’ life from early childhood through his time in prison, Blake’s score is not focused on the details of that story.

“I’m dealing with the topic of freedom – freedom from the limitations and strictures placed upon us by the circumstances of our lives, which for him are extraordinary.”

Jarvis Jay Masters, from his cell, also reflects on freedom:

“Sometimes when I refer to home, it means more about what you feel, how you get along with you, and how you cope with the environment you’re in. When I speak of home, I’m speaking of keeping my heart soft and strong, and not letting this place bring the worst out of anybody.”

Daniel Blake, composer, multi-instrumentalist and activist is the producer of three albums of his original music. He has toured with Esperanza Spalding, Julian Lage, and is a recipient of the 2022 New York State Council On the Arts Fellowship. Tania León, Pulitzer Prize winner and Kennedy Center 2022 honoree, describes Blake as “a talent whose time has come. He is doing great things.” Blake produces the annual Concert To Feed The Hungry. He holds a Ph.D. in composition from the City University of New York and is currently on faculty at the New School for Social Research.

Creative Alliance Project (CreativeAllianceProject.org) encourages broad community engagement with the arts as a means to promote equity and justice. CAP founder, Mindy Yanish, shares Blake’s vision. Reflecting on this project, Yanish says,

“Got My Wings” is the most socially and artistically significant project CAP has produced. It is a privilege to work with an artistic team that is calling attention to injustices embedded in our culture and is dedicated to equity and compassion."

“Got My Wings” will be presented at Katonah Space, 44 Edgemont Road, Katonah, NY, for three performances: Friday, February 3rd at 7 PM, Saturday, February 4th at 7 PM, and Sunday, February 5th at 2 PM. Tickets are $25 and will go on sale at GotMyWings.org in January.

Westchester Ballet Company

Welcome to Westchester Ballet Company (WBC), one of the oldest regional, nonprofit ballet companies in the United States. Founded in 1950 by celebrated ballerina and choreographer Iris Merrick and located in Ossining, New York, the company is comprised of approximately 100 dancers who are selected each September through open auditions held at Logrea Dance Academy, the official school of WBC.

As WBC approaches its 70th anniversary, the company is as vibrant, forward looking, and eager as ever to engage with young dancers and the local community in the pursuit of excellence in dance education and programming.

While the world and how we engage in culture and entertainment has changed dramatically since our founding, WBC is steadfast in its firmly held belief that there is great value in bringing people together through shared, communal performing arts experiences, and that there is an imperative to continue to preserve and pass on the knowledge and wisdom of classical ballet.

To dance is to be fully present in the moment—to manifest something meaningful that was not there before. These truths are at the core of what, how, and why we do what we do. We celebrate and support dance—how it connects us to our past, helps us navigate our present, and allows us to build our future.

Got My Wings, featuring Westchester Ballet Company, premiers today, Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 4 pm. Register for this free webinar at https://bethanyarts.org/calendar/got-my-wings/.

Got My Wings is a new work by musician and composer Daniel Blake, choreographed by Todd Hall and Tomiko Magario, featuring eleven of WBC’s senior company dancers. Mr. Blake’s musical composition is inspired by the writings of Jarvis Jay Masters, a Buddhist practitioner who has been incarcerated and on death row in San Quentin, CA for over four decades for a crime he did not commit (read more at www.freejarvis.org). The central questioning theme of the piece is, “where do we find our freedom?” with the purpose of shining a light on the subject of prison reform and advocacy, and how creative art, education, and spiritual mentorship can make a pivotal difference in the lives of incarcerated people.
