There is a young man next to me. He is reading a book by Augustine of Hippo. I couldn’t see which but it had St.Augustine in big gold letters. I should tell him he wore the same wool jacket under his robe for fourteen years and refused to remove it. You don’t wanna read a book on how to live from a guy like that. Do you?

I showed this to someone I love and they told me I have my sad eyes. I told them that I guessed I did. The boy in front of me, with the cool sandals and fade, wanted a poem about Ghandi. I don’t think I had ever written a poem about him, but he had written one himself and wanted to see if I could do it. I wrote something about Ghandi being more of an idea than an actual person. That his commitment to an ideal in some sense made him Ghandi. Part of peaceful protest was the way it starved those with power. That if he committed to the protest of his individuality and definite existence, that his very sense of being was that of rebellion toward inner oppressors that we cannot understand, that in some sense he could be Ghandi too. Turns out he only reads in French and his father will try to translate it when he gets home. I was hurt by this but then the boy said, “Maybe you’ll be like Victor Hugo.”. Maybe he’ll be like Ghandi. I don’t know but I know the translation is never as good as the original, but good in its own unique way. Anyways, yah, I had my sad eyes.

The rain looks like it is clearing. I’ll be in Central Park later today.

Sometimes on the slow days I’ll just write to occupy my mind. Offering a poem to those who are intrigued but not enough to stop. They read the sign and smile. So I give them a chance to have a random poem. Pick a poem! Any poem! Here are some random ones I have given away today.

A photo dump.

I have been reading 100 years of solitude. Gabriel García Márquez seems to be really concentrated on the fundamental elements of writing and allowing the plot to be. The characters are each unique and interesting but not elaborate as individuals but elaborate in relationships. It’s a complicated read but not a difficult one. The magical realism is perfection. The strangest of events happening as if it were as normal as turning on the faucet and seeing ketchup come out.

Happy Monday!

A farmer from Maine told me he was going to find a nice tree to read my poem under. His was about his oxen. How despite their appearance they were gentle and walked light. He recited Emily Dickinson from memory and wrote poetry for his grandfather. He liked the part of the day where the sun had set but there was still light. When the world went silent and families and dogs went in to eat dinner. He told me about how Michealmas daisies could turn a whole pasture purple.

A topic from today: why you write. In a sentence—because I can’t stop. Im a j***y looking for my fix. The sentence. The poem. The story. That never can exists but lingers somewhere beyond my reach.
Why do I come here to Central Park?
There exists a narrative to all of our existences. If I can show people a beautiful perspective and remind them of the wonder in their story than I do not need money or accolades. Then I am successful. I see my struggle and my beauty in everyone’s eyes and if in my exploration of the unknown I can give you solace, peace, or the opportunity to heal then it has been the opportunity of a life time.

Nothing but gratitude. Never give up. I love you. Thank you to everyone supporting me. I’m ceaselessly exploring and hopefully we discover something together.

Stand together and demand more of yourself. Demand more from the world.
