STAGE - State Theatre Arts Guild

STAGE - State Theatre Arts Guild The State Theatre Arts Guild, "STAGE", formed in 1979 as the Oroville Community Center Committee. STAGE was alarmed to say the least. Come join us!

It has been the driving force for the purchase, renovation, and restoration of the Oroville State Theatre. STAGE was formed back in the 1970’s to bring a performing arts center to the community of greater Oroville. Although the founding group wasn’t called STAGE in the beginning, their intent was to build a performing arts center. They were collecting donations from the community to do so, as well

as scouting locations and estimating costs. United Artists, who had purchased the State Theater (and made a lot of alterations with which we are still plagued), elected to divest themselves of the Theater. The STAGE group went to the City and suggested that the City buy the State Theater from UA and turn it into a performing arts center for the community. The community group reorganized as the State Theater Arts Guild, Inc. (STAGE), gave the community donations to the City to help acquire the Theater, then stepped back to become the guardian of both the Theater and the concept of it as the community's performing arts center. Over the decades, STAGE has raised funds and conducted supportive projects to purchase microphones, the grand Wurlitzer Organ, etc. and to restore the Theater to its previous grandeur.., but always in the background, on the sidelines if you will...until January of 2014, when the City of Oroville announced it could no longer afford to support the Theater, and they planned to solicit an outside commercial company to come in and take over the Theater. An outside company would need to ensure profits, therefore the local community and its use of the Theater would be compromised. With a great deal of courage and faith in the affection with which the Theater is held in the hearts of this community, STAGE decided to reorganize once again and marshal themselves into position to propose to the City that the Theater be turned over to STAGE on behalf of the community. On June 17th, the City Council decided to do just that. STAGE, an all-volunteer organization, is committed to creating a Miracle on Myers Street! This is one of those miraculous moments when ordinary people band together to do an extraordinary thing. It cannot be done by one of us, or even ten of us. It will take a community, working together, blessed for their courage and their heart, to make this miracle a reality. And we are such a community. The response has been wonderful, heartwarming and valiant. Become a partner in The Miracle! You won't regret it! There is no greater thrill than being part of something special, even magical, where humans set aside their egos, their greed and their personal problems to champion something that is greater than any one of them on their own. It happens rarely and you are lucky if you can be part of it once or maybe twice in your lifetime. This is that kind of moment. You are already one of us because you wanted to learn more. In 1967, The Beatles released their landmark LP, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” which became the soundtrack for “The Summer Of Love” that very same year. It was a year that was a microcosm for the peace & love generation, hippies and flower children whose Beatles supplied mantra was simple:...

A STAGE Organ Restoration Update from David Dewey:

There is a LOT to get done before January when we are scheduled to be installing the parts In the newly-rebuilt Chamber! Our organ consultant has looked over the parts in storage and what he could see looked in good order—there was some concern about possible rodent damage, but so far, things look great!

As a personal note, my wife joined the crew the other day, and, after a short instruction by Dave Moreno, was recovering primary pneumatics. Now I’ve done this work for some time now, and I have to say she’s doing a better job than I do!! I usually get glue on my fingers, which can be a problem; she seems to somehow avoid that. Hmmmm. I’ll have to watch to see how she does it!

Quite a bit was accomplished this week. The concentration was on the Diaphone pipe chests, which suffered water damage while in storage in Portland. Water damage in Portland?? Who woulda- thunk?

These may be our most challenging parts of the restoration, but time will tell! Come join us; learn a new skill, or hone ones you already have!

Thanks!
David

STAGE is still looking for six volunteers who can make a commitment of time to the Organ Renovation Project. Your time is every bit as valuable as a cash donation. Come join our organ team!

https://orovillestatetheatre.com/ -volunteer

Almost any measurable commitment will work:

• 4 hours a week
• 8 hours a week
• One month - say November or January
• Or join the team for 20 hours a week through to completion in March

Your commitment will help minimize the amount of “starting over time” with a brand new volunteer and the implications retraining brings to the project. Electronics, soldering, woodwork, and leather work are particularly valuable skills.

The work will consist of “wiring” and “leathering.” Other jobs include cutting, placing, gluing, shellacking, dismantling and reassembling and soldering. Diligent workmanship, an attention to detail and quality focus will be valued strengths.

We like to laugh, achieve and feel pride in our accomplishments. Come join our organ team. Your time is every bit as valuable as a cash donation.
