Meet The Boondocks - Day 15

Ever since we started working on Sweet Home Alabama: The Musical @ Orlando Fringe, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists. With Orlando Fringe now in full swing, it's time to introduce them to all of you! We call ourselves The Boondocks... and The Boondocks is many things: It's a place, it's a song in the show, it's a vibe, it's a group of people, and over the past few months it has become a family. This will be the last edition of this series of company shoutouts, and today he does indeed get his OWN day!

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Matthew Wyss!

Matt is my best friend. He is my CO-WRITER and PRODUCTION MANAGER. He was right there when Unseen Images Theatre started back in 2013. When we finished this script back in January of this year, we were simultaneously celebrating twenty years of friendship! Later this year, we'll both celebrate turning 40 together and begin a new and even more exciting decade. That means that for over half of my lifetime, he has been the one constant person who I can go to no matter what I need. That's extremely special, and rare. And I don't take a second of it for granted. We've been through it all together, and I am so proud of the men that we have both become because of each others presence in our lives. Over the years, both distance and careers have often scattered us away from each other, but it's never stopped us from making time for each other. Our friendship both started and blossomed over a mutual love for musical theatre AND early 2000's teen movies / romcoms, so the fact that we find ourselves here right now feels correct. I don't need to go on and on here about how much I love this man, because he already knows. I am, however, super excited that he arrives here in Orlando in less than 24 hours and we'll finally get to stand at the back of the house together and experience what we've created together!

Meet The Boondocks - Day 14

Ever since we started working on SWEET HOME ALABAMA: THE MUSICAL, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists. With Orlando Fringe now in full swing, it's time to introduce them to all of you! We call ourselves The Boondocks... and The Boondocks is many things: It's a place, it's a song in the show, it's a vibe, it's a group of people, and over the past few months it has become a family. We're getting down to the wire here, so the last two DO in fact get their own special day!

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Aaron W. Penfield!

Aaron means the world to me, he's truly my theatre brother and I've got nothing but love for him! He's basically the resident MUSICAL DIRECTOR for Unseen Images Theatre. We have done numerous shows together and it's just such a great partnership every single time. He listens to me when I'm scared, unsure, angry, confused, on the verge of a nervous breakdown AND he celebrates with me when we win. He's willing to follow me down any quirky path I might steer us towards, and instead of questioning WHY, he just focuses on HOW we're gonna get it done. Often times he is so much more than our MD, he's a collaborator for the show as a whole. I cannot imagine doing this standing next to anyone else and I am so grateful he keeps coming back time and time again.

Meet The Boondocks - Day 13

Ever since we started working on SWEET HOME ALABAMA: THE MUSICAL, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists. With Orlando Fringe now in full swing, it's time to introduce them to all of you! We call ourselves The Boondocks... and The Boondocks is many things: It's a place, it's a song in the show, it's a vibe, it's a group of people, and over the past few months it has become a family. I wish that I had the time to give each one of them their own special day, but we'd be here long after the festival is over, so I'll give you two or three per day.

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Lily Garnett & Rhe'a Hughes!

Lily has probably performed in more Unseen Images Theatre shows than any other actor, so obviously she's very special to me. She is a very dear and loyal friend and I am forever grateful for our friendship. Lily is someone that I know that I can count on no matter what. In this show, she plays STARR, she's in our ENSEMBLE, and she's also the understudy for MELANIE. Offstage, she's a confidant, a sounding board, a collaborator, an advice giver, and the list goes on and on. We have a ton of fun together and the laughs are non stop. I am so glad that I am able to call her one of my friends!

Rhe'a is a true artist when it comes to dance. She is back after making her Unseen Images Theatre debut with A BAD ROMANCE. I took a chance on her back in 2023 and after the choreography and leadership she provided to ABR, I was hooked! Needless to say she's somewhat of the official CHOREOGRAPHER for UIT and I wouldn't have it any other way! We have developed both a wonderful working and personal relationship and I am so proud of the work she has done on this show!

Meet The Boondocks - Day 12

Ever since we started working on SWEET HOME ALABAMA: THE MUSICAL, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists.

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Lisa Schroeder and Sahid Pabon!

Lisa may be technically making her Unseen Images Theatre debut, but she and I are no strangers to working together. We've been making holiday magic together since 2019 over at The Elves. She is our "COSTUMER" on this show. She helped out getting everyone's sizes and info for all of the pieces that needed to be special ordered, she did some thrift store runs for us, and she even modified and embellished a few special pieces. Lisa is a dear friend and long time supporter of UIT. I'm so excited to be able to introduce her to the wide world of theatre from the inside!

Sahid came to us late in the project due to some schedule changes of other performers. He jumped right in and got caught up and is now playing the role of WADE and he's in our ENSEMBLE. I love his interpretation of WADE and his big scene always makes me smile. He's making his Unseen Images Theatre debut. He has a heart of gold and is full of talent. We've very quickly become great friends that I already know will last for long after this show is over!

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Jessica Young and Nishaa Joy!

Jessica is making her Unseen Images Theatre debut! She's proof that video submitted auditions work and don't get overlooked. We were drawn to the video she submitted because of her stage presence and beautiful voice. In this show she plays MRS. BUFORD and is in the ENSEMBLE. I'm so glad that her audition stumbled into our inbox and that she is now part of this show and the UIT family!

Nishaa is returning to Unseen Images Theatre after having done the musical arrangements for A BAD ROMANCE in 2023, and she's back serving as MUSICAL ARRANGER on this show as well. I love that we can always count on Nishaa when we decide mid rehearsal that we want to change something about the track, and sure enough the next day she's worked her magic and it's ready to go! She's done a lovely job with the mixing and cutting of these tracks, and even a few originally recorded pieces in this show. She's always willing to jump in and help the Creative Team out when we're stuck on a problem, and she's one of the sweetest humans you'll ever meet!

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Blair Meeker and Felicia Thornsbury!

Blair is returning to Unseen Images Theatre after having debuted with A BAD ROMANCE in 2023. He is our lighting designer! The imagery he has helped bring to this show is quite effective. I particularly love how he makes NYC and Alabama look so totally different simply with the use of lighting. He's collaborative and fun to be around. He's always striving for the best in each project that he approaches. Outside of the theatre, Blair is one of my best friends and I look forward to many many more adventures together!

Felicia is making her Unseen Images Theatre debut with this show. She came to us via open call auditions and we were immediately drawn to her stage presence. She plays TABATHA in this show and is part of the ENSEMBLE. She's doing exciting things over at one of the newest attractions in town, and I admire her dedication and commitment to this show and team.

Meet The Boondocks - Day 9

Ever since we started working on SWEET HOME ALABAMA: THE MUSICAL, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists. With Orlando Fringe now in full swing, it's time to introduce them to all of you! We call ourselves The Boondocks... and The Boondocks is many things: It's a place, it's a song in the show, it's a vibe, it's a group of people, and over the past few months it has become a family. I wish that I had the time to give each one of them their own special day, but we'd be here long after the festival is over, so I'll give you two or three per day.

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Monica Titus and Sean Hancock!

Monica is one of those performers that I've seen in shows for years and always said to myself "I'd love to work with her one day", but never have until now. Hence, she is making her Unseen Images Theatre debut. She plays STELLA KAY PERRY in our show (the mother of our guy, JAKE). STELLA is the cool mom, but also knows where her and her son's heart belongs. Monica is sweet and joyful to be around. I am so glad we are finally working together and I hope it's the first of many!

Sean is returning to Unseen Images Theatre after making his debut in 2023's A BAD ROMANCE. In this show, he plays FREDERICK and is in the ENSEMBLE, he's also our Dance Captain! Sean is extremely helpful during rehearsals. When we start to stray from Rhea's choreography, Sean is there to get everyone back into line! Sean is a super talented dancer and it's always fun to watch him on stage. Offstage, he's got a genuine and caring attitude and he's extremely humble.

Meet The Boondocks - Day 8

Ever since we started working on SWEET HOME ALABAMA: THE MUSICAL, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists, with Orlando Fringe now in full swing, it's time to introduce them to all of you!

Today, I'd like to introduce you to Andrew Sandoval and Destany Sherman!

Andrew is making his Unseen Images Theatre debut and we are so glad to have him. He started out as a swing, and then due to a few schedule changes, he moved into an ENSEMBLE role and also plays BARRY. He brings a certain likability and charm to BARRY, who might otherwise be written off as one of the antagonists. Andrew is kind and professional, a very easy going performer throughout the whole rehearsal process. I'm looking forward to getting to know him better during our run.

Destany is also making her Unseen Images Theatre debut. She's our Male Swing, which means she covers all 5 of the Male Ensemble tracks in the show if any of them were to be out of the show for any reason. Although she joined the show very late in our rehearsal process, she has quickly become part of the Boondocks family. We joke that she's Destany "Only Needed One Rehearsal" Sherman, but there's a lot of truth to that... okay, so she was actually at 4 rehearsals, but still, she has risen to the occasion and absorbed so much choreography and lines in such a short period of time; it's rather impressive! You can catch her in the show's bigger numbers even if she's not swinging into one of the official roles.

Meet The Boondocks - Day 7

Ever since we started working on SWEET HOME ALABAMA: THE MUSICAL, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists, and with Orlando Fringe fast approaching, it's time to introduce them to all of you!

Today, in honor of OPENING NIGHT, I'd like to introduce you to our leads, Austin Sultzbach and Christie Duffer!

Austin is one of the most easy going people I've ever met. Although I have had the chance to work with his wife, Liza, in the past, this is Austin's Unseen Images Theatre debut. He plays JAKE PERRY in our show, and his eleven o'clock number literally brings me to tears each time I watch it. We didn't have an actor in mind when we were writing this role, but something about him being our JAKE just sits so perfectly with me that it's hard to imagine it ever being any other way... it was meant to be. Austin is kind, helpful, and a joy to be around. I am so glad that we are getting this opportunity to work together and become friends!

Christie is returning to Unseen Images Theatre after playing CINDY in 2023's A BAD ROMANCE at Orlando Fringe. I adore Christie and her work ethic. She's a true professional and it shows in this musical. It's no secret that Matt and I love a female led belting musical that centers around one sole character, and that's exactly what we've tasked Christie with this in this role. Out of the whole 75 minute show, she might have about 2 minutes of offstage time, and yet she handles it with aplomb! She is an absolute force in this show, and I'm so grateful that I get to call her a friend!

Meet The Boondocks - Day 6

Ever since we started working on SWEET HOME ALABAMA: THE MUSICAL, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists, and with Orlando Fringe fast approaching, it's time to introduce them to all of you!

Today I'd like to introduce you to Celestino DeCicco and Lauren Anne Andersson!

Celestino is making his Unseen Images Theatre debut. He plays ANDREW HENNINGS in our show. Our ANDREW is not the same one you know from the movie. We've completely overhauled this character with some help from Celestino, since he is a very collaborative artist, which we love. Celestino is a fantastic actor who brings in tiny nuances and details to the role that he is playing which really makes his performance stand out. I'm so glad we've gotten the opportunity to work together on this show!

Lauren is no stranger to Unseen Images Theatre with many past roles over the years. She plays LURLYNN in our show, which we wrote with her in mind. Similar to ANDREW, LURLYNN is not the same character you know from the movie! Lauren is the kind of performer that I can just relax with because I trust her 100% that she's going to arrive at the right choices. Her attitude is always upbeat and she always brings a smile to everyone's face. Offstage, she is a cherished friend of mine and truly forever part of the Unseen Images Theatre family!

Meet The Boondocks - Day 5

Ever since we started working on SWEET HOME ALABAMA: THE MUSICAL, I've had the extreme privilege and opportunity to work with a group of immensely talented theatre artists, and with Orlando Fringe fast approaching, it's time to introduce them to all of you!

Today I'd like to introduce you to Jay Bog and Julie Weber!

Jay is making his Unseen Images Theatre debut as EARL SMOOTER in this show. I love his goofy yet endearing approach to the role. Jay is eager to learn and try new things in the rehearsal room, and he's always up for a social company outing! Jay is doing big things in the independent film world, and I can't wait to see what he will do next.

Julie is returning to Unseen Images after making her debut in 2023's A BAD ROMANCE as Riri! In this show, she is our Female Swing, which means she covers all 5 of the female ensemble roles if any of them are out for any reason. Watching her swing in and out of roles during the rehearsal process when one of the 5 were absent has been an absolute joy and also mesmerizing that she can remember FIVE different show tracks! I adore Julie for her work ethic and positive attitude and I am so grateful that she's here if we need her. Even if not swinging in, you can still catch Julie in the large company scenes at each show!
