Hello everybody!
I have highly enjoyed being a part of the Art & Autism Exhibit with Center for Autism and Related Disorders at the Dr. Phillips Center. The exhibition features some truly exceptional artists, like myself, who just happen to be on the Autism Spectrum. I based my work this year on a piece by the featured artist, Josh Hubert, which was an incredible life-like tiger. My balloon fabrication took around 20 hours to complete and used over 470 balloons. The sculpture stood over 10 feet tall and many guests throughout the event complimented the tiger and even visited the exhibit after seeing the balloon feline.
Along with making the Art & Autism installation, I also made a few balloons for artists in a few of the additional events for UCF Celbrates the Arts! There was an Opera showcase called "A Double Bill of Fun" which was not only fun, but absolutely hysterical! I made a balloon for the an amazing performer named Nicole who played the Character "Captain Lovelock"...She made me cry laughing with her comedic timing and she had a phenomenal voice! The entire cast was fantastic as well (Especially a gentleman named Frederick who played a character named Mr. Scruples) and I was one of the many people who gave them a standing ovation at the end of the performance. At the end of the opera, I made them all one balloon dogs and I made Captain Lovelock a hilarious wearable balloon mustache to represent her character!
This jubilee also had another amazing event called the Creative Clash. The Creative Clash was a competition in which 4 groups of UCF seniors and alumnis were given an hour to paint a scene pertaining to a unique topic. The topic chosen was "Out of this World" due to the Artemis 2 rocket launching. The entire process was fascinating to watch and when the competition ended, 4 amazing pieces of art were created. After the event, I made a balloon Knightro and Pegasus for the winning teams. The teams went on to visit the gallery as well. Since many of them were One Piece fans, I made them one balloon swords and one of them even did a hilarious reference to the character Zoro.
Thus far, being a part of the Art&Autism/UCF Celbrates the Arts, has been exceptionally fun. Learning of so many other individuals like myself who have had similar struggles and have expressed themselves through various mediums, brought a genuine smile to my face. My good friend Gesa with both CARD (Center for Autism and Related Disorders) and PALS set up the exhibition and has been informing many visitors on the importance of programs such as CARD. CARD, just like Autism Learning Partners, has a major impact on the Autism community and they are advocates for individuals on the Spectrum. In setting up this beautiful event, they have helped give many neurodivergent individuals a voice to help others understand what Autism acceptance and advocacy looks like.
The Art & Autism Exhibit is running for the rest of this week at the Doctor Philips Center and I am looking forward to seeing all of you there!
