WEAPON OF CHOICE: IN ORLANDO SENTINEL

Thank you Matt Palm for the thoughtful and thorough write up about our upcoming exhibition at the Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center of Central/SPL. On view December 12- March 10, 2023. Official opening night with artist talk by Richard Johnson on January 12. Mark your calendars.

What if hurtful words left a visible scar in the same way a physical attack does? That’s the question that led to “Weapon of Choice."

Snap! Orlando presents Weapon of Choice, in collaboration with Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center of Central/SPL. Weapon of Choice was conceived by photographer Richard Johnson to provide a graphic demonstration of the invisible pain caused by verbal abuse through photography. It is meant to provoke a conversation about the problems of domestic violence, child abuse, and bullying. Richard Johnson takes the power of a photo to a new level by illustrating the invisible and eternal scars victims of emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse endure. Participants, children and their parents, were invited to choose a “hurt word” that has impacted their life. Makeup artists then painted the word on participants’ faces or bodies, integrating the word into simulated wounds — bruises, scratches, and burns.

DOUGLAS KIRKLAND 1934-2022

It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of Douglas Kirkland, an extraordinary human, a legend, a true gentleman, and a dear friend. His heart and talent were larger than life. It was our great privilege and delight to have shared so many memorable moments with him and Francoise over the years.

Our hearts go out to Francoise, his family, and extended loved ones. We love you, Douglas.
