Brazilian kite maker Jonathan Orfeo
Born in Sao Paulo Brazil, 33 years old Jonathan often reflects of his early childhood days in the streets of Sao Paulo when he and his kite mentor brother in law Claudio would search the neighborhood for materials to build their “Rei dos P**as” (king of the skies kites). “We would find or bamboo and “Seda” the special paper used to make the best flying kites. We learned how to prepare the wood to bend in just the right shape.
By hand I manipulated the water soaked wood to curve and bend into the perfect shape. In my mind I was training the wood to bend in the wind and hold the air. I gazed intently at the sticks and envisioned the view the finished kite would have one mile above my neighborhood. I was creating a kite warrior, you see the object back then was to launch your P**a high high high above. By pulling, tugging and jerking the kite line at just the right interval, I could direct my p**a into an attack dive to wrap around one of the other p**as flying nearby. Once the strangling wraps were made Jonathan would tug his warrior kite line back and forth to cut the other’s line off. Then it was a mad dash to retrieve the fly away losing kite. These days I simply love building and flying my kites peacefully along side all the other kites in the sky. “Its an art, a skill, a passion I have never lost”.
