I am big into true crime, and this amazing man is one of my biggest heroes. Paul Holes is a retired cold case investigator who has and continues to play a huge part in solving cold cases all over the United States. I highly recommend his book “Unmasked: My Life Solving America’s Cold Cases”, his show “The DNA of Murder with Paul Holes”, and his podcast “Buried Bones” with Kate Winkler Dawson.
Most recently, Paul and his team finally identified Joseph DeAngelo as the East Area Ra**st and Golden State Killer using DNA and genealogy. DeAngelo terrorized the state of California from 1974-1986 committing at least 13 murders, 51 rapes, and 120 burglaries.
In my portrait of Paul Holes, I wanted to not only pay tribute to him, but also to the victims he fought for and to the science he utilized without which DeAngelo would not have been brought to justice. During the creation of this piece, I listened to the audiobook of “Unmasked”, binged some episodes of “Buried Bones”, and most importantly listened to Michelle McNamara’s book “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer”.
