On view in the Spotlight Gallery: AFTER THE KINGDOM: THE WEIGHT OF TOMORROW

An Exhibition by Peterson Guerrier and Chris Jones

History does not disappear. It changes form.

After the Kingdom: The Weight of Tomorrow brings together two distinct artistic practices that investigate what remains after power, time, and memory have shaped the world. Through painting, ceramic installation, and found objects, Peterson Guerrier and Chris Jones construct an imagined archaeology of the present one that asks not only who we are, but what we will leave behind.

Peterson Guerrier’s paintings occupy the space between monument and myth. Rendered in blue pigment and acrylic, his figures emerge as kings, queens, witnesses, and keepers of memory. Suspended between antiquity and contemporary life, these subjects challenge traditional notions of portraiture, presenting Black identity as timeless, monumental, and inseparable from history itself. Throughout the exhibition, recurring themes of legacy, inheritance, sovereignty, and remembrance invite viewers to consider the responsibilities carried long after kingdoms have fallen.

In contrast, Chris Jones’s ceramic installations explore the quiet persistence of objects. His vessels, crowns, and artifacts question the relationship between function and aesthetics, suggesting that the things we create often outlive us. Arranged as relics from an unknown civilization, the works investigate time, consciousness, greed, and systems of value. Through ceramic forms and found materials, Jones asks viewers to consider how meaning is assigned and what significance remains once utility has faded.

Together, the works form a dialogue between people and objects, memory and material, permanence and loss. If Guerrier’s paintings ask, Who were they?, Jones’s installations respond with another question: What did they leave behind?

Ultimately, After the Kingdom: The Weight of Tomorrow is an exhibition about inheritance. It is an invitation to reflect on the stories we carry, the systems we build, and the traces we leave for those who will one day stand where we once stood.

Mel’s Bad Girls Club: Sensory Overload is an annual all-female art exhibition celebrating the creativity, individuality, and diverse perspectives of women artists. Now in its 20th year, the exhibition brings together a dynamic range of artwork and artistic voices for a vibrant showcase at CityArts. Beyond celebrating the artists, Sensory Overload also gives back to the community, with proceeds benefiting local charitable organizations.

Join us for our not-so-serious storytelling competition! It is a $5 donation to attend. Anyone can enter by dropping their name in the hat. Ten names are drawn at random and each storyteller is given 5 minutes to share their story. Three audience judges determine the top 3 tellers who win prizes to a local establishment.

On view in the CityArts Café: "State Flower Ladies" by June Bunch

For State Flower Ladies, June Bunch transforms 50 state flowers into botanical ballerinas. Her illustrations combine figure drawing with floral theatrics, adding elements of vibrant colors and texture-rich embroidery to her work. In an instant, her images stretch the viewer’s eye past the present to see the blossom’s full-seasonal vitality, summarized in one frozen motion.

Bunch curates contemporary illustrations by studying plants’ “choreography” of growth, illuminating their dance with vibrant colors and clean lines. Her visual art remains rooted in botany and ballet, featuring postures that hold emotional richness, highlighting human nature and flora in a bold, empowering way.

The art is created first through expressive figure drawings and botanical sketches that are then translated digitally and drawn line-by-line with a pen-tool, tending to each marking with thoughtful detail.

Meet June Bunch this Sunday, 7/12, from 12:00 PM–1:00 PM, during an Artist Q+A featuring live music and visual art. Hear the stories behind State Flower Ladies, learn more about her illustration process, and enjoy an original musical performance by the artist during this free event at CityArts.

About the artist:

June Bunch () is a self-taught illustrator from St. Petersburg, FL. Her art focuses on natural growth, interpreting plants’ movement through human body language. She studied botany and illustrated for plant nurseries before moving to Juneau, AK as a naturalist guide. There, June grew inspired by the “choreography” of the natural world around her and humanized it, incorporating figure drawing paired with a love of dance.

Her work has won an honorable mention at the Morean Arts Center and has been on display at the Imagine Museum, Dunedin Fine Arts Center, Five Deuces Galleria, Art@400, The Werk Gallery, and the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance Gallery. She has recently been awarded a micro-grant from the Gobioff Foundation which sponsored a portion of the State Flower Ladies exhibition.

Time is running out to experience this milestone exhibition, on view through Saturday, July 11 at 6 PM. Celebrating two decades of CityArts, the exhibition brings together artists who have exhibited with us throughout the last 20 years. More than a retrospective, this showcase serves as a tribute to the artists who have helped shape CityArts into one of Central Florida’s premier contemporary art spaces and reflects the impact of our creative community.

Since opening in 2006, CityArts has welcomed more than 20,000 exhibiting artists, presented over 1,500 exhibitions, and introduced millions of visitors to the work of local and regional creatives. This anniversary exhibition honors that legacy by showcasing a diverse collection of artists who have been part of our journey, celebrating the talent, innovation, and community that continue to define Downtown Orlando’s arts scene.

“As a result of Orlando’s large creative class, there’s an abundance of talent in Central Florida,” says Barbara Hartley, Executive Director of the Downtown Arts District. “We celebrate all the artists and musicians who have participated, the leaders who have volunteered on the board of directors and committees, the dedicated staff and all of the individual and corporate sponsors and art buyers who have generously given their support.”
