In January 2016, Opera Orlando raised its banner with the goal of becoming the standard bearer for the art form in central Florida. The region had been well-served for over a half of a century by the Orlando Opera and then, in 2009, by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Florida Opera Theatre. It was from the latter of the three that Opera Orlando was forged. Opera Orlando's spirit of colla

boration, innovation, and community is truly what sets it apart. The company seeks to continue to collaborate dynamically throughout the region with other arts groups, performers, artists, and musicians. In addition, the Opera seeks to maintain and enhance its ongoing artistic partnerships with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orlando Ballet as all prepare for the opening of Steinmetz Hall at Dr. Phillips Center in the spring of 2021. This will ensure the production of world-class, cutting edge, innovative presentations that will continue to attract and captivate diverse audiences within the community, nationally, and from around the world.

You might be wondering what does Erik from HAPPY FEET TWO and Jonas Kaufman in TOSCA have in common... well, that's what our new series YOU THINK YOU DON'T KNOW TOSCA will help you discover. 😉😁

Erik the penguin and his dad Mumble are on their arduous journey back to Emperor-Land when they encounter a precarious ice bridge guarded by an elephant seal (“Brian the Beachmaster”) and his two cubs, who refuse to let the penguins pass. It is at this juncture that the somber clarinet solo from TOSCA is heard, and Erik then seemingly out of nowhere bursts into full operatic performance mode speak-singing Cavaradossi's famous aria from TOSCA with new English lyrics of course to fit the plot of HAPPY FEET. The film track is titled “Erik’s opera”. Can you hear the stirring rendition from the movie at the link below OR you can hear Jonas Kaufman's perhaps more stirring rendition from TOSCA on YouTube. AND now you know what Jonas Kaufmann and Erik the Penguin have in common. You're welcome!! 😜🤣

Everyone is dying to know....

Is TOSCA based on a true story???

Well... time for the big reveal 😁😉

Tosca is a political thriller, set in Rome in June 1800 with the Kingdom of Naples’s control of Rome threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy. In other words, it was a crazy time! The action takes place over less than 24 hours, making it a very intense experience. Each act of Tosca is set in a very real place in Rome (pictured here) – Act I in the church of Sant’Andrea della Valle, Act II in Scarpia’s apartment within the Palazzo Farnese and Act III on the battlements of the Castel Sant’Angelo. Together, they represent three facets of Rome’s power – church, palace and prison.

HOWEVER, while the characters and their backgrounds contain historical allusions, the four main protagonists, Cesare Angelotti, Mario Cavaradossi, Floria Tosca, and Baron Scarpia are fictional. Still makes for a great opera or a great excuse to visit some opera inspiring locations in Rome. 😂😂😂

Tickets start at just $29 for this opera classic at Steinmetz Hall: https://bit.ly/OOTOSCA23

In honor of the start of , let's hear it for MÉXICO CANTA!

Opera Orlando's Frida fiesta was a smashing success. Many thanks to our event partner and co-host Casa de Mexico. From the art to the food to of course the music, this incredible night was a fun celebration of Frida Kahlo. Cecilia Violetta López, Soprano dazzled attendees as she gave us a sneak peek of her upcoming role as Frida in our MainStage production, debuting in January at Steinmetz Hall. Many thanks to for the wonderful write up here:

https://laprensafl.com/opera-orlando-y-casa-de-mexico-exaltan-la-cultura-mexicana

“Cecilia Violetta is a renowned soprano who performs in opera theatres across the country, but she has not forgotten her roots.” She acknowledged that her success is the product of her parents' sacrifice when emigrating from Mexico to the United States. ”

Season subscribers can bundle all three MainStage shows including FRIDA for just $99! Extra savings are also available to subscribers who want to add on our production of The Juniper Tree to their season package. Buy tickets here: bit.ly/OO-2023-24MainStage

Please help us welcome two of our new board members for the 2023-24 Season: Bea Hoelle Hawes and Nancy Wagers.

Bea Hoelle Hawes is an entrepreneur, patron of the arts, and lifelong opera aficionado. Her passion for organizing events and contributing to the community began as she earned an undergraduate degree from Wayne State University. She volunteered with faculty groups and other organizations, assisting in special events and outreach activities. In Florida, she owned and operated her own business, Bridal Elegance by Bea, for 25 years. She consulted with clients and planned the details for the happiest days of their lives.

After retiring, she volunteered with Winter Park Hospital's pre-op unit as a liaison to patients and patient families. Bea's love of music and the performing arts began early, listening to radio broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera on Saturday afternoons. She carries her enthusiasm to this day, having served on the board of the Orlando Philharmonic and as a director and president of the Friends of the Orlando Philharmonic. She looks forward to the opportunity to continue contributing her enduring support and service to the arts community.

Nancy is a career educator and arts advocate. She served on Orlando Opera's (former company) Board for several years and as Board secretary. Nancy has also served as president of the Orlando Opera Guild, raising significant funds to support the Company and its education outreach. Nancy is no stranger to the Opera Orlando Board as she has served as the past secretary for two terms, and is excited to be part of the Development and Nominating Committees.

Additionally, Nancy is a docent at the Orlando Museum of Art and a member of the Friends of American Art, a collecting circle focusing on works from the late 1800's to mid 1900's. She served as a presenter of arts survey course in Orange County Public Schools. Her motto is: "Life is short, but the arts are long."

Opera Orlando would like to welcome Greek soprano Eleni Calenos, soprano to the Company for an all-new production of Puccini's TOSCA.

Ms. Calenos has captivated critics' and audiences' admiration for the clarity, warmth, and beauty of her lyrical voice and her dignified characterizations. She has dazzled audiences at Opera Santa Barbara in her portrayal of Puccini's leading lady, Floria Tosca, and we are thrilled to have her star in this stunning new production on the MainStage in Steinmetz Hall at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

Her recent roles have included Desdemona in Maryland Lyric Opera's 2022-23 production of Otello; Giulietta in Giulietta and Romeo with Teatro Grattacielo; Liu in Turandot with the Evansville Philharmonic. Ms. Calenos also performed in Opera Outdoors with Opera Omaha in 2021.

She has also excited audiences as Mimì in Cleveland Opera Theater's La bohème, Madama Butterfly at Opera Santa Barbara; and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus with the Greek National Opera. Recent operatic highlights also include Suor Angelica/Giorgetta in Suor Angelica/ Il tabarro with Opera Delaware, Saida in Schönerland with the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, and L’Infante in Massenet’s Le Cid with Odyssey Opera.

We can't wait for her to take the stage in TOSCA this October! Tickets are on sale now and start at just $29. Subscribers can save on a three-show subscription.

On this day of remembrance, we at Opera Orlando share Leonard Bernstein's sentiment "...our response to violence [will always be] to make music more instensely, more beautifully, more devoted than ever before."

Our thoughts are with those who lost family members and loved ones in the 9/11 tragedy, and we look forward to a season of incredible music making and community building. We offer a special look back on our One Voice Orlando concert held on 9/11 back in 2016 a benefit concert for our community in response to the Pulse Nightclub tragedy.

that TOSCA is actually based on a french play by Victoien Sardou entitled "La Tosca" which featured Sarah Bernhardt in the lead role.

There was even an English burlesque version of the play entitled "Tra-la-la Tosca," but we digress...

Puccini saw Sardou's play and purchased the rights to turn La Tosca into an opera. 4 years later and after several arguments with his librettists and publisher, TOSCA the opera premiered and was an instant success remaining to this day one of the most performed operas in the repertoire.

that Opera Orlando is coming off its most successful season to date?

Since its inception in 2016, the Opera has experienced exponential growth across all of its programs, including moving into Steinmetz Hall—an architectural wonder of an opera house.

But that’s not all. To match the Opera's growth and to ensure that the Opera is and will continue to be an arts organization that the entire community can take pride in, Opera Orlando’s staff has also expanded, from just two to now 14! The Company has also successfully grown from a modest $250,000 annual budget in its first season to more than $2 million in a short six-year period, maintaining that budget level over the past two seasons.
