FLYING DUTCHMAN tickets are now on sale but what is the origin story of the DUTCHMAN?? From Sir Walter Scott to Johnny Depp, from Europe to Asia, the legend of the FLYING DUTCHMAN has many interpretations and adaptations. 🏴‍☠️⛵👻

The legendary ghost ship was first referenced in print by John McDonald in 1790. With later references by Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Moore. BUT the most impactful mention was that by Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in May 1821 which puts the scene as the Cape of Good Hope using real life captain Bernard Fokke of the Netherlands as the alleged inspiration for the Dutchman character. Fokke's fast trips caused people to suspect that he was aided by demonic powers, thus dooming him to sail the seas forever.

The Blackwood magazine inspired an English melodrama referenced in a Heinrich Heine poem which was later read by.... duh, duh, duh... Richard Wagner. The story goes that Wagner was on the run, with his wife and dog 🐶 no less, and has to escape in the cover of night on a ship which encountered rough seas. That experience reminded him of the Heine poem and his masterpiece opera FLYING DUTCHMAN was born!!! 🌊🌊🌊

We are thrilled to be joined by the talented young violinist DANIELA GARZÓN for OPERAZZI BASH in just two weeks at Dr Phillips Center. 🎻🎻🎻

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Daniela artistic journey began at the age of five, when she started her musical training at the Municipal Institute of Culture and Tourism of Cajicá, Colombia. Since then, singing, violin, and piano have become the pillars of a journey defined by discipline, dedication, and a constant desire to grow.

Throughout these years, several experiences have played a significant role in her artistic development. Her participation in the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestras, performances at Steinmetz Hall and Carnegie Hall, and her selection for the YOLA National Festival, culminating in a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall alongside renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel, have greatly expanded her artistic horizons. She has also performed as a violin soloist with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and strengthened her musical training through Berklee College of Music.

Together with her teacher Andrés Zapata, she developed her first single, “Infinito,” an important step toward establishing her identity as an artist and singer.

TODAY!!! See the powerful documentary BOYS OF TEREZIN at 6pm at the Orange County Regional History Center with interviews with Terezin survivors and the actual "boys" who created the literary magazine VEDEM and found beauty and hope amidst brutality and despair. 🙏🤞🕊

VEDEM will be staged and presented as a double bill with Hans Krasa's BRUNDIBAR in which several of the "Boys of Terezin" performed while held captive at the Theresienstadt concentration camp. VEDEM was an underground newspaper of sorts that the boys created sharing poetry, cartoons, stories, artwork with each other in hopes of rising above the despair and brutality of their imprisonment. Several boys survived the Holocaust and are interviewed as adults in this documentary and to hear their words and reflections is absolutely powerful and inspiring.
