That question sits at the heart of Come From Away — a true story about thousands of unexpected guests, a small town, and the extraordinary decision to simply help.

For Caribbean American Passport News Magazine, we had the opportunity to speak with members of the production about the experience of bringing this story of community and human connection to the stage.

Today, on September 11th, CAP Village had the incredible honor of being invited to Orlando Shakes Theatre to sit down with members of the cast of Come From Away—a powerful musical inspired by real people and the extraordinary events that unfolded during one of the most unforgettable days in modern history.

When the world watched the Twin Towers fall on September 11, 2001, the impact was felt far beyond New York City. As U.S. airspace shut down, 38 planes carrying more than 6,500 passengers and crew were unexpectedly diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. Suddenly, a community of roughly 10,000 people was faced with welcoming thousands of complete strangers from around the world.

That remarkable true story became Come From Away. Without giving too much away, the show isn’t simply about the tragedy of 9/11—it’s about what happened when ordinary people were placed in extraordinary circumstances. It tells stories of strangers helping strangers, different cultures coming together, unexpected friendships being formed, and moments of laughter, love and humanity emerging during an incredibly dark time. Many of its characters are inspired directly by the real residents and passengers who experienced those days.

And CAP Village gets the opportunity to hear from the cast bringing those stories to life! 🎤🎬 We’re excited to sit down with them, learn more about the responsibility of portraying these real-life experiences, and get a closer look at what audiences can expect when Come From Away takes the stage at Orlando Shakes.

On a day when we remember the lives lost on September 11th, this story also reminds us of something incredibly important: even during humanity’s darkest moments, kindness can still shine. ❤️🇺🇸🇨🇦

Today, September 11th, is a day that will forever hold a place in history—and in our hearts. 🇺🇸❤️ As we remember the lives lost and the countless lives forever changed by the events of September 11, 2001, CAP Village had the incredible honor of being invited to Orlando Shakes Theatre for an amazing interview with members of the cast of Come From Away.

Based on the true events surrounding 9/11, Come From Away tells a remarkable story that unfolded far beyond New York City. When U.S. airspace was suddenly shut down, 38 planes carrying more than 6,500 passengers and crew were diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. A community of roughly 10,000 people suddenly found themselves welcoming thousands of complete strangers from around the world.

What happened next became an extraordinary story of humanity.

Without giving too much away, Come From Away goes beyond the tragedy of 9/11. It shines a light on the incredible acts of kindness, compassion and unity that emerged during one of the darkest moments in modern history. Strangers became friends, cultures came together, and ordinary people opened their homes and hearts to people they had never met. Today, we remember. ❤️ On September 11, we honor the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the first responders and communities who showed extraordinary courage, compassion, and strength in the aftermath.

That spirit of coming together is at the heart of Come From Away — a story about what happens when people choose kindness in the face of unimaginable circumstances.

Tonight, Orlando Shakes will gather our community for Night of Remembrance, a special evening featuring Come From Away, a talkback with Chief William Aaron Rhodes following the show (around 9:20 ish), and the opportunity to visit the Orlando Fire Museum before and after the performance.

If you have already seen Come From Away, you can catch a special reading of Anne Nelson’s The Guys at 7 p.m. in the Mandell Theater (presented by Kangagirl Productions).

May we always remember. May we always honor. And may we continue to show up for one another. ❤️
