Today, we celebrate Juneteenth — a day honoring freedom, resilience, and the power of preserving stories that shape who we are. ❤🖤💚

This Juneteenth, Orlando Shakes is honored to be hosting a private developmental workshop of “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, adapted by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright James Ijames.

While this workshop is not open to the public, it marks an important step in the life of a new play as artists gather to explore, refine, and deepen this powerful adaptation of Zora Neale Hurston’s timeless novel.

As we continue the journey toward the world premiere of “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, we are proud to help bring this landmark story to a new generation through live theater.

Audiences will get a first look during PlayFest this fall as James Ijames and Director Roberta Emerson continue developing this extraordinary work ahead of its world premiere in 2028.

Because stories matter. Voices matter. And the stories we choose to tell help shape the future.

It’s an exciting week for us at Orlando Shakes…a hot new bombshell has entered the villa 🏝️ and it’s James Ijames!

James Ijames is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, director, and educator whose work has been celebrated across the country for its bold storytelling, humor, and exploration of identity, history, and culture. He is best known for Fat Ham, his acclaimed reinvention of Hamlet, which won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received multiple Tony Award nominations following
its Broadway premiere. Orlando Shakes is honored to welcome him as he develops his new adaptation of “Their Eyes Were Watching God” ahead of its PlayFest presentation.

The crown is up for grabs 🌹⚔️ Join The Young Company Alumni as they return to the stage for their second annual production, Henry VI: War of the Roses—an epic adaptation that combines all three parts of Shakespeare’s Henry VI trilogy into one sweeping tale of ambition, loyalty, betrayal, and the devastating cost of power.

Originally adapted by Richard Width and first performed by TYC in 2002, this revival reunites artists from across generations of The Young Company alumni to revisit a story deeply woven into the program’s history. Filled with political intrigue, shifting alliances, shocking betrayals, and the spark that ignites the legendary Wars of the Roses, this production is a thrilling chapter in Orlando Shakes’ ongoing exploration of Shakespeare’s history plays.
