The rarely shown EL CID (1961), offered in a roadshow presentation at the Orinda Theatre for a single showing, Sunday, July 12th at 11 a.m., is among a handful of epics produced by Samuel Bronston, perhaps his best. The great "El Cid" of Spanish legend is brought to life on the screen by Charlton Heston as Rodrigo Diaz, a knight that knows a divided Spain can not stand as the nation is overrun by the invading Moors.
Given further greatness by a remarkable score by Miklós Rózsa, Sophia Loren, Hurd Hatfield, Herbert Lom and Frank Thring enrich the cast. All photographed in 70mm SuperTechnirama, which highlights the stunning vistas of Spain that no longer exists as beautifully today as you see it captured in the film on our giant Orinda Theatre screen. The 6.2 million dollar production (1961 dollars) was directed by Anthony Mann.
We are honored to have appear, in-person, at this single morning screening, Dr. William Bronston, EL CID producer Samuel Bronston's son, who will co-introduce the roadshow presentation with Matias Bombal and share his memories of his father and the production in Spain.
