Empty Bowls is a national fundraiser started by artists. Artists created bowls and served soup to help raise money for local food pantries. It has since grown into an international organization and fundraiser. You can find more information out here.

The best thing about this fundraiser is the proceeds stay local. All money raised for this event will go towards providing Oregon students and families with food.

Your ticket includes a bowl of your choice to take home, soup, bread, and dessert. This is a drop in event you can come and go as you please. Pre orders are guaranteed a handmade ceramic bowl of their choice to take home. Anyone purchasing at the door is not guaranteed a bowl.

Awards presented for the 2026 RRVPG Plein Air Art Exhibit

Awards were presented for the Rock River Valley Painter’s Guild Plein Air Art Exhibit at the awards reception on Friday, October 9. Judge Jean Apgar recognized the following artists who entered their art in the exhibit that is now on display in the Lowden Gallery of the Coliseum Museum until October 31.

Frist place to Dick Cholke of Pecatonica for his watercolor “Rain Barrel”; Second place to Lucinda Winterfield of Dixon for her acrylic “Old Renne Farm”; Third place to Tom Linden of Rockford for his watercolor “Up Your Alley”; and an Honorable Mention to Terry Werntz of Freeport for his oil “Sunday Afternoon”.

Awards were presented for the Moments in Monochrome Art Exhibit at the awards reception on Friday, October 9. Judge Heather Shore recognized the following artists who entered their art in the exhibit that is now on display on the main floor of the Coliseum Museum until November 14.

Visitors are also allowed to vote for their favorite art piece with the People’s Choice winner announced at the close of the exhibit.

Moments in Monochrome Art Exhibit opens at the Coliseum Museum

The Coliseum Museum in Oregon, IL is pleased to announce the opening of the Moments in Monochrome Art Exhibit featuring 43 artists from across Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin, on display from October 1 – November 14. The art exhibit of 80 individual art pieces offers 2D and 3D work in acrylic, ceramics, charcoal, glass, graphite pencil, India ink, marble, mixed media, oil, pastel, photography, steel, watercolor, and wood burning.

Paula Kuehl, of McHenry, has been painting since 1981. She started painting with oil paints, which were fun but slow to dry and would become muddy if you didn’t wait for them to dry. When she discovered pastels, she switched to them and never went back to oils. Pastels better suit her personality – she loves to draw and pastels are like drawing with color. She also loves the vibrancy of the medium and the versatility it provides – versatility in the ability to use different types of paper and the way the pastel reacts on that paper. She feels her work is a study capturing the essence of life – whether it be in a child, a flower or a landscape. Pastels are like life – vibrant and full of energy That is what she attempts to capture in her works.

As a self-taught artist, Kat has honed her craft through years of dedication, constantly exploring new techniques and pushing boundaries in her own work.

Her artistic journey is driven by a belief in the power of self-expression, and this passion is something she has shared with countless students throughout her career. Kat has taught and inspired both children and adults at institutions like Rock Valley College, as well as through her popular paint night events and hands-on workshops.

Kat’s art is inspired by the limitless realms of fantasy, often blending elements of the imaginative and the surreal. Her work doesn’t conform to any single style or medium—it’s about breaking free from boundaries and embracing creativity in its purest form. This sense of boundless possibility is something she instills in her students, encouraging them to explore beyond the expected and find inspiration wherever it leads. Through her teaching and her art, Kat strives to create a space where everyone can experience the joy and healing power of creativity.

At Kat’s Fine Art Studio, Kat continues to encourage others to take the leap into their own artistic journeys, offering a welcoming environment for people of all skill levels to explore, create, and grow.

Dick Cholke started painting watercolors after his retirement. After a period, he started to enter shows and Plein Air competitions. Dick has taken classes from local artists and workshops from a few nationally recognized artists. Having fun with the media and the people is most important. His best moments have been entering and selling at his first Door County Plein Air festival. Dick’s work has been accepted into the Illinois Watercolor Society’s National Exhibit, and he has received multiple awards in Regional & State shows.

Constanza Mayer is another author who will be at the Coliseum Museum Book Fair on November 14.

Born in Santiago, Chile, Constanza spent most of her childhood living in different cities across Chile until she finally settled down for about six years in the small village of Beecher City, Illinois. There, she began her true journey into the realm of fantasy and all things magical—Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars fed her imaginative mind. This is when, at 13, she began to write her first fantasy novel, but, sadly, it was lost due to a computer virus.

In 2004, she moved back to Chile with her family where the cultural shock, and having lost what she had written, stopped her writing streak. Only in her last years of university could she write again. This is where "The Battle of the Erathiel" began to develop. The seed was planted.

After a few years of hard work and living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she finished the first novel of her series in Santiago, Chile on October 29, 2016. Currently, she is working on the Spanish edition of "Across the Enchanted Sea" with Chilean editorial Tríada Ediciones and preparing an anniversary edition of her first book. Book two of the series is soon to start its edition process as well.

Constanza is an avid reader, a lover of the arts, and a devoted piano player and composer. Among her dreams, she hopes to continue traveling across the world to fill herself with more experiences to write from, as she typically says:

“Hay que vivir para poder escribir.” “You must live so that you may write.”

On June 5, 2023, she married the love of her life, Carter Shoemaker, making her dream of finding true love a reality. She is now Mrs. Shoemaker but will continue using Constanza Mayer as her pen name.
