The Stark Museum of Art will be closed today, Friday, June 19, 2026 in observance of Juneteenth. We will resume regular hours Saturday, June 20.

June 19, 1865 - Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. This is a day of recognition, restoration and celebration.

🇺🇸"America 250: Three Presidents—Lincoln, Grant, and Garfield" Artwork Highlight 🇺🇸

James A. Garfield (1831–1881), the twentieth president of the United States, grew up in poverty and had to work to help support his family. Berninghaus portrayed one of Garfield’s most picturesque jobs, depicting him as a “canal boy” driving the mules that pulled boats along the Ohio Canal. The work was dirty and dangerous, and Garfield fell into the canal numerous times and contracted malaria. Although he worked on the towpath for only about six weeks, when he ran for president, his history as a canal boy became a theme in his campaign, proclaiming his rise from adversity.

Learn more about Berninghaus and the stories behind his presidential works during "America 250: Lecture Log Cabin to White House" with Curator Sarah Boehme, PhD, on Thursday, June 25 at 6PM.

Plan your visit to experience "America 250: Three Presidents—Lincoln, Grant, and Garfield," on view now through December 23 in Gallery 5.
