ESTABLISHED IN 2005, the Omaha Film Festival (OFF) began as a way for the Omaha community to experience the artistry of independent filmmaking through the exhibition of new films by aspiring artists that are otherwise unavailable for viewing in the area. The Festival showcases over 100 films during its annual event, selected from an average of close to 1000 annual entries that come in from around

the world, offering a wide variety of independent cinema choices that includes regional and world premier films as well as advanced screenings of films that have already attracted wider distribution. Narrative features, documentaries, short films, and animated shorts are screened during the week-long Festival, with a special section for Nebraska-made films as well. The selected filmmakers are invited to attend the festival and are given the opportunity to discuss their films with the audience after each screening.

Tamsen Butler is an award-winning author, TEDx speaker, military veteran, and mother to two ridiculously clever kids.

Valery Shafack is an entrepreneur at the intersection of sports, media, and entertainment. He's working on building brands, spaces, and experiences that empower athletes, emerging creatives, and entrepreneurs. Val Is passionate about shaping Nebraska's future while driving global impact through strategic partnerships, storytelling, and community-driven ventures.

Congratulations also to Merrick Brtek for her promotion to President of the Board and Valerie Russell for her promotion to Board Secretary!

Every time the Omaha Film Festival is included on MovieMaker Magazine’s list of 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee, it means something a little different because every year, we work hard to earn it all over again.

For 21 years, OFF has focused on creating a festival experience where filmmakers feel supported, audiences are connected, and great stories shine. Being recognized again in 2026 is an honor, especially in a landscape filled with over 12,000 festivals.

What we’re most proud of is that this recognition reflects the people behind OFF ... our staff, volunteers, sponsors, board, filmmakers, and the Omaha community that continues to believe in independent film and the artists who make it.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make OFF the filmmaker-first festival it continues to be. We’re excited for what’s ahead.

Quick trip down to Waco to hang out with our buddy Louis (executive director) of the Waco Independent Film Festival, toured their venues, and had some amazing bbq! Bonus trip to check out the amazing film school at Baylor University. Awesome tour with instructor and OFF alum Maverick Moore and cool getting a chance to meet their department chair Chris Hansen.

A great benefit to attending the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival was meeting up with some of our industry friends! Great seeing amazing film strategists Katie and Ian from Festival Formula, awesome film festival specialist Nancy Collet, and Tyler and Brynne, founders of the new festival platform .

Also amazing to catch up with Ali and the producers from the OFF'26 doc "Ali Eats America!"
