📷 CLOSING SOON: Limited time remains to see 𝘔𝘖𝘛𝘏𝘌𝘙 𝘛𝘐𝘔𝘌: 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦 from photographers Rachel Cox and Rose Marie Cromwell.

Both artists' work disrupts the historically male-dominated field of landscape photography. Cox uses historical photographic processes to reflect on broader issues of bodily autonomy, power, and control. One example of this is her piece 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, which consists of twelve gum dichromate prints with custom pigment derived from her own placenta.

At the same time, Cromwell's photographs resist the inherited, masculine language of Western landscape photography and instead focus on an embodied, maternal approach to seeing. A point of inspiration for her work is Robert Frank's 1950s photographs of his family road trip. Upon seeing these images, she wondered what the photos might look like from the mother's perspective.

We’re so grateful to our summer interns for sharing their time and talent with us over the last twelve weeks. Help us celebrate their accomplishments and wish them good luck this school year!

💫 Riley McKennan, a business student at Creighton, helped our Operations team and learned the inner workings of the day-to-day at an arts nonprofit

💫 Sophie Longo, an MA art history student at University of Wisconsin–Madison, assisted with research for artist-in-residence duo Parsons & Charlesworth

💫 Sunny Nickolite, University of Nebraska at Omaha fine arts student, worked alongside artist-in-residence Sholeh Asgary

💫 And Jadyn Anderson, an art history student Bryn Mawr College, returned to Bemis as a curatorial intern working with our archive

WELCOME BACK: This Thursday, we are joined by one of the inaugural LOW END performers, Kara-Lis Coverdale!

Here’s what you should know about the musician that 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 called “one of the most exciting young composers in North America”:

- She has opened for iconic acts such as Big Thief, Caribou, and Death Grips.

- She has created original scores for films including 𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯, 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘛𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 (2023), which won the Vancouver International Film Festival Winner Audience Award.

- In her time playing organ at the St. John Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montreal, she would experiment with mixing in unexpected riffs from rappers like Drake and 2 Chainz.

🖤 PHOTOGRAPHY artists + enthusiasts: Join renowned author/curator Dr. Michelle Millar Fisher and 𝘔𝘖𝘛𝘏𝘌𝘙 𝘛𝘐𝘔𝘌 exhibiting artists Rachel Cox and Rose Marie Cromwell for a panel discussion at Bemis.

The trio will explore photography’s role in constructing personal and political memory, focusing on motherhood in considering how images become repositories for emotion, trauma, and care across time.

🖤 ABOUT MICHELLE MILLAR FISHER:

Fisher is the chief curator at Cooper Hewitt in New York. From 2019–2026 she was the Ronald C. and Anita L. Wornick Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She also collaborates with an independent team on a book (MIT Press, 2021), a touring exhibition, and a program series called 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘥: 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘉𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘴. Previously she worked at MoMA The Museum of Modern Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. She holds an MA, two MPhils, and a PhD in Art History, and publishes and lectures widely on craft, design, and architecture.
