A new 4K restoration of The Secret World of Arrietty opens at the Capitol Theater on July 5

Children 12 and under receive free admission!

The Secret World of Arrietty is a gorgeous and adventure-filled adaptation of Mary Norton's The Borrowers, one of the most beloved children's books of all time, directed by Academy Award-nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi.

"Studio Ghibli and Arrietty have a way of taking you where you may not expect, whether you're scrambling through rooms as large as canyons or clambering into the safety of an outstretched hand, a simple gesture that says it all." - Manohla Dargis, New York Times

The Films of Sarah Jacobson open at the Capitol Theater on July 1

A double feature of I WAS A TEENAGE SERIAL KILLER + MARY JANE'S NOT A VIRGIN ANYMORE!

Sarah Jacobson's punk-spirited DIY films from the 1990s combine B-movie aesthetics and riot grrrl feminism, standing as a testament to the vision, determination, and raw talent of the Queen of Underground Cinema.

Mary Jane's Not a Virgin Anymore, Jacobson's only feature film, is a vibrant and vital antidote to every phony Hollywood teen picture, bringing lo-fi realness to the coming-of-age genre. I Was a Teenage Serial Killer, a 27-minute short, is Slacker meets Valerie Solanas, as a 19-year-old woman responds to catcalls, condescension, and bad s*x the only way she knows how: murder.

Taking on every major function from production through distribution, Sarah Jacobson proved herself as a sh*t-kicker and rule-breaker, finding fans in filmmakers Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging) and Tamra Davis (Crossroads), as well as Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth.

A special screening of Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar takes place at the Capitol Theater on August 17 🍹

Put on your culottes and join the Olympia Film Society for a special fundraiser screening of the cult comedy hit Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar! Released during the pandemic and largely denied a traditional theatrical run, this wildly funny, endlessly quotable film has since earned a devoted following as a modern cult classic. Follow best friends Barb and Star as they leave their small Midwestern town for the vacation of a lifetime, where friendship, romance, musical numbers, and absurd adventure await in sunny Vista Del Mar.

This one-night-only fundraiser is your chance to experience this beloved comedy the way it deserves to be seen; on the big screen with fellow fans. Admission is $20 per person and includes a free popcorn, plus we'll be serving a special "Buried Treasure" drink inspired by the film. Costumes are strongly encouraged, so break out your brightest resort attire, boldest culottes, and most vacation-ready looks. All proceeds support the Olympia Film Society and help keep independent film, live events, and community arts thriving in Olympia.
