The making of an icon!
This is my first time making an icon,
I don't really much experience with paints, but something in me told me to go for it!! I think it turned out beautifully!! ð This piece took about 20 hours. I did it over 1.5 days. Hardcore. Lol
The process I went through for making it went as follows:
â¢Select a wooden board, note that mine is not cut in the traditional Orthodox way, but I worked with what I could find haha.
â¢Treat the wood with maaany layers of flat, white paint(effectively making the surface into gesso).
â¢Sand lightly until smooth.
â¢Buff with cotton cloth until you achieve a pretty good shine.
â¢Stain the back of the board, I did mine in a dark brown.
â¢Sketch out your chosen piece on paper.
â¢Transfer it to the board with carbon paper.
â¢Use a small tool to carve gently into the paint/gesso, carving every line, this is because the painting process will cover the drawn lines, carved lines are easily seen.
â¢Add gold leafing or leafing paint to desired areas.
â¢Start painting! I used watered down acrylics, but traditionally, ground up colorful natural gemstones mixed with egg yolk are used.. I ain't got that kind of money people... lol
â¢Once all the painting is complete and dried, set with a spray clear coat, and then a thick layer of varnish.
This was an exhausting process, but worth it!
