“In the modern era, if there were a single American composer who represented the triumph of intuitive lyricism over systemic dogma, it would be Ned Rorem. Rorem, who died last November at age 99, never aligned himself with any particular composition school, and preferred to write music that he "wanted to hear." His published work includes over 500 art songs, candid diaries detailing his life and relationships in Paris and New York, and of course: choral music.”

Join us for the next performance in our Concert Series, the Esoterics' "As palmieras," which will be performed on Saturday, April 9 at 3 PM.

Commissioned for the RAMOS festival in Lisbon in 2018, The Esoterics' founding director Eric Banks composed As palmeiras ("The palms"). Cultures around the world and through various eras of human history have used the palm tree to symbolize royalty, salvation, bounty, luxury, fertility, and exile. Also, the worldwide demand for palm oil has resulted in an environmental crisis. For this concert-length cantata, Banks has collected poems, adages, proverbs, and articles – about the palm tree and its various fruits, and has presented these texts in various choral textures. "The Palms" almost traverses the entire globe (longitudinally) -- it starts in California, heads east, and ends in Tahiti. In 37 vignettes, Banks' composition sets texts from 33 countries in 24 different languages. It is a fascinating study of an unlikely subject, and creates a resounding, world-opening experience in concert.

In keeping with St. John's | San Juan's current policies, masking is strongly encouraged for all attendees while in the building.

All performances in St. John's Concert Series are supported by freewill donations. We would recommend a donation of $20 per person, $10 for seniors and students. We are able to accept donations by card on the day of the concert.

We are so pleased to welcome The Esoterics to Olympia for their first public performance in nearly 2 years. This program, entitled THE REWAKING, revisits some of the group’s favorite pieces from its 2019 season. That season’s theme, “elements of integrity,” explored the concepts of vulnerability, inclusivity, honesty, and humility, and featured newly-written choral music by living composers who comprised “the new majority” – women, transgender people, people of color, and members of the greater LGBTQIA+ community. St. John’s & The Esoterics hope that you can either join us in person, or online through our live-stream, for this contemporary choral contemplation of love, peace, renewal, togetherness, and gratitude.

As always, St. John's Concert Series is supported by donations. We will take a freewill offering during the concert, and suggest a donation of $20 per person ($10 for seniors and students). For those who are unable to attend in person, the live-stream of the concert is also supported by a freewill donation.

Attendees of St. John's Concert Series performances will be required to show proof of vaccination for Covid-19, or proof of a negative PCR test within 48 hours of the concert start time and masks must be worn.

Join us at 3:00 PM on November 20th at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 114 20th Street, Olympia, or online. The hyperlink for streaming is on the St. John’s website, www.stjohnsoly.org, or The Esoterics website, www.theesoterics.org.
